My wife and I are just starting our Battletech collection and we want to start painting. We have 12 'Mechs from CGL and one 3D-printed miniature. (If that affects how paint is applied.)

We have several can of primer from home projects, but they are all all gloss finish, will that matter?

I've also heard different recommendations about whether it's better to start with a black or a white primer. It sounds like that depends on whether you are going to be painting a light or dark main color, is that correct?

Not many painters in here. The last time I painted a mini was 35 years ago with tester model paint. So, I'm not the one to answer. Smile

Fair enough. Maybe I'll just give it a try on my Commando, I don't care if that one ends up ugly. Laughing

Trial and error is truly the best way to do it!

you want a dark-ish flat primer. The gloss may not play nice with some paints.

There are many types of primers out there.
Personally, I use Vallejo primers—which many consider less than ideal—though I haven’t encountered any issues with their application, other than the occasional instance where the primer peels off when I remove masking tape.
I always start with a black base, even when painting with light colors; I then apply a gray primer over the black. So, by my standards, I generally use both black and gray.
It’s also worth noting that the black Vallejo primer dries with a glossy finish. To avoid this, I either add a matte medium directly to the black primer or spray a coat of pure matte varnish over it once it’s dry. I don’t run into this issue with the gray or white versions.
One final tip: let the primer dry for at least 12 hours to ensure the best results.
Happy painting!
