Overview:
One of an amazing number of new designs being fielded by the Word of Blake, the Red Shift is
manufactured by Leopard Armor, a Terran company that formerly produced vehicles for ComStar.
When the Word of Blake took Terra, Leopard Armor simply shifted their contract and even
began producing an old design again for the Militia, the Padilla Heavy Artillery Tank. The
Red Shift is the companyÃ?Â?s first foray into BattleMech production, quite a challenge
for the veteran company.
The Leopard Armor design teamÃ?Â?s stated goal was to produce a light, fast
BattleMech to spot for and help protect Padillas, as such a combination was highly effective
during the era of the first Star League. The key to such a Ã?Â?Mech was clearly the TAG
system, the most accurate method of targeting for the Arrow IV artillery system mounted on
the Padilla. Knowing this, the designers built the Ã?Â?Mech around the TAG, using an
extralight engine and an endo-steel frame to provide maximum speed. A Guardian ECM system
was included to protect both the Red Shift and its companion artillery vehicles, as well as
maximum possible armor to help ensure survivability.
Capabilities:
Though the TAG system is the keystone of the Red Shift, it is not its only weapon; to
underestimate the diminutive Ã?Â?Mech would be a mistake. Able to reach a top speed of
just over 150 kilometers per hour, many tracking systems have trouble targeting the Red
Shift once it gets moving. Those that do hit it have to blast through armor protection that
is quite strong for a Ã?Â?Mech its size. The Guardian ECM system protects it from systems
such as the Artemis IV and C3 networks as well.
In addition to the TAG, the Red Shift carries two medium pulse lasers. The accuracy of
these lasers is very helpful when other speedy Ã?Â?Mechs are encountered, and the Red
Shift has proven quite successful at destroying both a variety of light Ã?Â?Mechs and even
some mediums.
Deployment:
The Red Shift has been sent to every division of the Word of Blake Militia, usually assigned
to units containing Padilla Heavy Artillery Tanks or another Ã?Â?Mech or vehicle mounting
the Arrow IV system. In some cases, they have been sent to missile-heavy units, as the Word
of Blake has access to the Free Worlds LeagueÃ?Â?s Semi-guided warhead technology.
Variants
A more dedicated scouting variant of the Red Shift replaces the Guardian ECM with a
Beagle Active Probe. Roughly two out of every five Red Shifts produced are of this variant,
which are being used to replace aging Mongooses.

This mech was built to deliver targeting data for Arrow IV artillery units with its TAG and is very good in doing so.
Its speed, full armor and ECM will get it in TAG range without being blasted to pieces before.
If it's attacked by fast lights, hovers and/or VTOL's the pulse lasers will do a good job. The Red Shift should not be used to hunt lights or backbite heavies as long as there isn't a special opportunity to do so.

The basic frame is pretty good. The armor is good for its size, as is the speed, so this 'mech has a reasonable chance to survive.
What I don't like are the pulse lasers. Getting within six hexes is just asking to be pummeled, and with the weight savings from converting to ER lasers this 'mech could mount a Beagle probe or C3 link. A machine gun probably wouldn't hurt either.

As a combat Mech, this just plain sucks. Its fast and accurate, but at those ranges, the heavier Mechs would chew you up.
It's just alright as a artillery spotter though, able to speed in, call in Arrow IV strikes before it races off. In this role, the medium pulses can keep infantry and light vehicles away.

The speed is better than the Locust it replaces. But losing those 3 hexes of range off your maximum hurts too much even in a scout mech.
Its too expensive and doesn't really use it's heat potential too well. Could use one pulse and 2 ER Mediums to make it a much better machine.
