    The Omega was originally a customized variant of the IMP-2E Imp.  Although the Imp has long
    been known primarily for its use by Wolf's Dragoons, there have been a few examples left
    shattered after their battles throughout the Inner Sphere.  One such example found its way
    in 3022 to a pilot on Coventry, Michael von Trapp.  Although having suffered major damage to
    nearly every single system (including the engine & electronics), the base chassis was still
    able to be repaired & returned to service.
    Taking advantage of the nearby Coventry Metal Works factory, von Trapp took the opportunity
    to make some slight adjustments in the design.  The original Mitchell Systems LRM-15 was
    downgraded to a TharHes Reacher 10-rack, and Donal PPCs replaced the original Magna
    Hellstars.  Defiance B3Ms replaced the original Magna Mk II lasers, with 3 of those lasers
    being replaced by 2 Defiance B3S small lasers.  Jumping capability was added with the use of
    Chilton 850 Mk II jump jets scavenged from a downed Mararuder II; additional tonnage was
    freed by dropping 3 of the heat sinks (although the heat curve was still a little high).
    This left room for an additional ton of armor to be added, providing extra protection on the
    arms.  Locally-produced comm & targeting systems replaced the originals.
    Von Trapp used the Destroyer to some success in LCAF (& latter AFFC) service.  However, the
    difficulty opponents had in distinguishing it from stock Imps also made it difficult for von
    Trapp to work out any licensing deals with Coventry Metal Works to mass-produce the design.
    Blackwell Industries on Outreach had no problem with a custom design belonging to a
    Mechwarrior (or even for other customers to ask Blackwell to customize their own Imps in a
    similar fashion), but drew the line at allowing another manufacturer to blatantly copy their
    design (at least without paying some hefty licensing fees).  After some legal wrangling,
    however, Blackwell and Coventry worked out a licensing deal.  Beginning in 3038, Coventry
    would begin producing newly-built Omegas at their factory, while Blackwell and Coventry
    would market refit packages for Imps under the "Omega Imp" brand.
