Overview:
Imported from xtro: Project Zhukov and Project Zhukov record sheets, by steve cross.
Although the Mars Assault Tank had been in service since the late 2800?s
and was a massively armed tank (some crews called it ?dropship on treads?) it
was not without its flaws. First, it was glacially slow and could barely top out
32kph meaning it was poorly suited towards offensive operations as it was
barely more mobile than a bunker. The Mars was also a maintenance
nightmare thanks to its quadruple track layout. If the inner track was damaged
or thrown then the entire outer track had to be removed before work could be
done on the damaged sections or road wheels. The tanks weight, combined
with its low power but high torque clutch also meant the Mars had an alarming
propensity for ?eating? clutches and gearboxes.
The Mars XL was a solution to some of the tanks problems but the
suspension and tracks were not ever designed to move at 56kph and the tank
suffered from almost endemic problems with it shedding tracks and wrecking
    yet more clutches and gearboxes.
The Mars XL fix also reduced the Mars? armour somewhat and the Mars?
protection was already a bit light for a vehicle its size and was made even
thinner to try and fit the lighter engine into the tank.
It was obvious that a replacement was needed, whilst the Mars was a fine
defensive asset and many would end their days as de-tracked emplacements
covering approaches to vital facilities in Hells Horses possessions, but it was
near useless in the fluid battles the Clans preferred.
Spurred by the need for a true assault weight tank the Horse Scientists
looked at the Mars as a starting point as well as records from the Amaris Civil
War and Operation KLONDYKE for inspiration. With the Khan and SaKhan?s
full backing the Scientists had full access to any technology, staff or equipment
    they needed.

Capabilities:
The result was a 95-ton tank protected by an impressive 17 tons of
Ferro-Fibrous plate, a far thicker hide than the Mars? 11.5 tons of similar
protection, this would allow the new tank to stand up to the heaviest
barrages of fire from hostile Mechs. Indeed, the protection was so heavy
that nothing rivalled it until the Wolves Heimdall saw service in the
    3060?s.

Deployment:
Called the Kratos after the Greek spirit that was the personification of
strength the new assault tank was immediately issued to Alpha and Beta
Galaxy with them often being massed together in a Star, bringing
overwhelming firepower to a battle, although such formations were rare
owing to the limited number of Kratos available, the tank taking a
considerable amount of time to produce and being resource intensive
meaning it never was available in the numbers needed and Star Colonels
resented any reallocation of their Kratos to other formations.
The Kratos wasn?t seen by Inner Sphere forces until late in Operation
REVIVAL, little more than a month before the Battle of Tukayyid where it
earned a fearsome reputation in a short space of time. Some credit the Kratos
as being the inspiration for the Challenger X tank that entered service in 3057
but the Challenger was under design finalisation prior to Tukayyid and could not
have been influenced by the encounters with the Kratos.

Variants:
Like the Mars the new design featured Artemis augmented LRM-15?s
that were installed over the tanks engine deck and would fire over the
tank at forwards targets, but it only had two launchers but double the
ammunition load allowing the missiles to be used for longer. The tank?s
long-range punch was also enhanced with an ER large laser mounted in
the turret which was more than capable of delivering powerful punches at
    long range.
Mid-range firepower comes from a pair of LB-10 pattern autocannons
which take full advantage of the ability to fire solid or proximity fused
shells to either punch through armour or exploit the damage already done
by hitting exposed areas the proximity rounds. These guns could also
be used to engage low flying VTOL?s and were superb at disabling hostile
    vehicles.
Anti-infantry defence was provided by a trio of flamethrowers, one in
the bow and one on each flank. These weapons were actually traditional
flamethrowers and were connected to a dedicated supply of propellant
and fuel source instead of more modern designs which drew upon the
    heat of the reactor.
This varied armament let the tank engage at any range and thanks to
its 285 rated XL engine it was also capable of moving at 56kph and
sustaining it without damaging its tracks. The tracks and track links were
heavily reinforced as well as using myomer fibers to help with flexibility on
the track links themselves. The clutch and gearbox problems that
plagued the Mars were also eliminated by running the drive-train through
to the rear sprocket wheels which powered the tracks, unlike the Mars
which used its front sprocket wheels, running the prop-shaft and
drivetrain through the tank to the front of the hull, this reduced stress on
the transmission, now reinforced to handle the speeds required of it and
    made maintenance a lot easier.
The whole design was also modular with weapon systems and
computers able to be swapped out in short order and six variants were
developed with only the rare D configuration raising any eyebrows mainly
due to the inclusion of an Arrow IV long range missile launcher. When
brusquely questioned about the inclusion of a dishonorable artillery
weapon on a tank, it was pointed out that the launcher was only armed
with surface to air missiles and the Delta configuration was an
anti-aircraft asset. This was only accepted at face value as the
ammunition could be easily swapped out for bombardment rounds, but
that the Horses only ever used it was an anti-aircraft unit against Clan
    forces was seen as acceptable.
