    Someone got the bright idea to have the Bolos tow their own fire support to the combat zone
    as a force multiplier.  So here we are.

    The main design constraint on the Caboose is its tonnage was limited by the Bolos power
    plant.  Any more then 25 tons and the drag would overpower the relatively small Bolo engine.
    Next was the rather obvious Thumper configuration.  This put a minimum limit of 16 tons of
    omni-space required.  A turret was also included.  Though it can't do anything for the
    largest possible weapon systems it does give normal weapons the ability to deal with
    flankers who've gotten into the rear lines.  After the controls and power systems were
    included to allow independent operations this leaves a rather paltry 3 tons remaining for
    armor.  But at least it's reactive armor offering extended protection from the most likely
    damage source, enemy artillery.

    Use of the Caboose, and it's off brand relatives, is not included in doctrine.  Thus it's
    use is at the discretion of tactical commanders.  Implementation is mixed.  A majority of
    commanders see the loss of mobility while the Caboose is under tow as too much of a cost.
    The adage about being the firstest with the mostest is bandied about often.  Commands that
    do see more common usage tend to be infantry heavy.  The ability for a Bolo to bring along
    dismounts without cutting into its own combat payload is worth the sacrifice in strategic
