Overview:
This export variant of the Rook was produced by Majesty Metals for the Magistracy's ally,
the Aurigan Coalition, after the Liao Incursion late into the Fourth Succession War, as part
of the buildup following that invasion.
Capabilities:
Built on the capabilities of the standard Rook, the Cormorant was made to fulfill three
particular needs of the Aurigan Coalition in the wake of the Liao Incursion and the parallel
invasion by the Taurian Concordat: its immediate need for an affordable mech that was robust
and capable enough.
The CWC-X001 Rooks serving with the wild Hunt impressed Kamea Arano and Alexander Madeira
enough for them to use it as a basis for Auriga's first actual mech design.
Meant to be used by regular ACDF MechWarriors, the Cormorant retained the energy weapons of
the X001 Rook but replaced its SR4 racks with twin LR5 racks that got its missiles from a
single ton of ammunition. The intent, like with the Rook, is to close with a target so the
lasers can do their work. But with the Cormorant, MechWarriors have the option to fight from
stand off range for a while, or whittle a target from afar before closing.
The Cormorant's 90 meter jump distance was born of economic necessity. Five jump jets cost a
quarter of a million C-bills. But ACDF doctrine is one of mobility and maneuver. So to keep
costs down, the Cormorant kept enough jump jets to cover the distance it can, helping keep
the mech's costs at just above 4 million C-bills.
The same logic went into the weapons loadout. Why does the Cormorant have two LR5s and not a
single LR10? Because two LR5s are much cheaper than one LR10.
The Machinegun with its half ton of ammo is there not just for cost savings but to provide
the Cormorant with anti-infantry capability.
Deployment:
Publicly, purchase by the Aurigan Coalition of the Cormorant was to replace losses suffered
by ACDF regular units from the dual invasion by the Capellans and Taurians late in the
Fourth Succession War.
While this is true, Kamea Arano used this pretense to ALSO equip the planned Force Miriam
units in case Auriga's leaders agree to join the Canopian-Andurien invasion of the Capellan
Confederation in the early 3030s. A new mech taking to the field is expected to provide some
shock value in the initial entry of Auriga to the invasion, especially as none of the
"Incursion" forces came back to Liao space.
The Cormorant is kind of like an "at need" mech for the ACDF, as an entirely new design is
currently being made for Auriga's use. Depending on its performance in the "Andurien
Crisis", though, the Cormorant just might become Auriga's "signature" unit.
A fascinating fact about the Cormorant is that it is actually the first production version
of the Rook, which was intended to serve as the first of the Canoveri designs for the
Magistracy of Canopus.
Since the form of the Rook wasn't yet designed by the time Auriga placed the order for the
Cormorant, Majesty Metals decided to just buy a license for the Chameleon from Defiance
Industries, ostensibly to produce the mech for Canopus and other clients. In a way, the
Cormorant is a Chameleon variant.
