Overview:
During the Clan invasion of Draconis Combine space, large numbers of Combine 'Mechs were
destroyed in the fighting, with no chance of any salvage to support reconstruction. As a
result Coordinator Takashi Kurita orderd a massive production effort to replace fallen
units.
Nimakachi Fusion Products Ltd., a small manufacturer which had only produced Spiders,
was forced to comply.
Eager to profit from the circumstances, the firm's owners decided that simple expansion
of the Spider production lines would not guarantee future orders when the fighting slowed
down. So a new design was sanctioned, with the limited resources available for the required
expansion.
With an eye to future expansion, Nimakachi was eager to incorporate as much new and
recovered technology as was available from the Draconis Combine. The Venom was born. The
Combine military was so pleased with this design that it immediately placed an order for
production of the Venom in large numbers.
Capabilities:
The Venom is a heavier version of the old Spider produced on Tematagi. It is 35 tons and
uses Kallon FWL special ferro-fibrous armor. The new design also has an extralight engine,
the Vox 280XL, in order to keep the space available for increased firepower. The weapons
featured by the design are four of the new Tronel XII ,medium pulse lasers.
The movement capabilities of the Venom are identical to those of the original Spider.
Since the phenomenal distances covered and the amount of control a pilot has during a jump
were paramount in the original design, changes would have been counterproductive
There are two drawbacks that could not be corrected. First, the 'Mechs armor is light.
The engineers are hoping that the movement capabilities of this design are sufficient
compensation. The Second problem, which is compounded by the first, is the extra-light
design of the engine. Any reasonable penetration into the left or right torso would more
than likely penetrate the engine's shielding.
Like its predecessor, the Venom is successful because of its maneuverability.
The new Venom to roll off the production lines addresses the problems of the lack of
significant armor protection. One of the medium pulse lasers were removed and in its place
two tons of additional armor were added. This allows the Venom the protection it needed to
be a success on the battlefield.
Deployment:
The first Venom came off the production line in January 3050, and has seen limited field
testing so far. Theodore Kurita has seen fit to have all new designs sent to areas near the
Periphery to protect against bandits and for potential punitive strikes. However, several of
the new 'Mech designs have been spotted patrolling worlds in Dieron, near the Terran
frontier

Compared to the -9K it lost some firepower but gained armor. A side effect of this mod is a better heat management but still it can't use much of its firepower while jumping without overheating. So it still has to use the hit 'n run tactic and would be able to do it longer due to the stronger armor.

This is a pretty fair bash-n-dash mech. The speed is impressive, letting the mech outrun what it cant outshoot. The armor is fairly standard for its tonnage, nothing special there.
The weapons are what give this think real bite. Three medium pulses let this mech take on anything its wieght or smaller with a reasonable chance of success. Especially in places where the mech can jump behind its target, alpha strike, and jump away.
The down side is that tactic creates a lot more heat than this mech can safely handle. You dont have to worry about ammo explosions, but shutting down in someones crosshairs will kill you just as dead.

Not worth it. Keep the standard Spider. The adding of the XL doesn't buy you a lot really. Armour and an extra Pulsed Medium.
Eh, its good but not god. XL engines are a big detractor.

It's extremely rare for me to award an XL equipped battlemech with *****, but this is one dangerous machine. The armor is close to maximum, and the tremendous speed this 'mech is capable of is worth another three or four tons of armor, at least. The three lasers give it a hard-hitting and accurate punch, although I'd prefer to see one of the LT lasers mounted in the head, just to provide a critical hit soak to protect the cockpit.

Not quite as effective as the other variants, it plays to safe. The SDR-9K had the extra pulse to call upon when in need, this is a nice rookie mech with the exellent speed and jump ability.
