The A variant is much better. Losing 5 shots of ammo for another back up weapon doesn't change much.
You need that ammo more than you need more incentive to go wading into combat.
I still dislike Artillery Omni mechs. This one is better than the Prime, not as good as the Alpha.

Not many people use artillery mechs, but for some reason, I like them.
Before you scrap this mech for only having a handfull of lasers, bear in mind that this beast is toting around two of the biggest damn guns in the game.
That having been said, the lasers are strictly for self defense only. Attempting to wade into a shoot out with these things is a Dumb Thing.
This has a good balance in that it can fire both of the Arrow IVs without overloading the heat sinks and still have enough cool left over to haull ass to a new position if it has too.
Best place for this thing is a couple three maps away with someone acting as a spotter.
