Overview:
    First prototyped in 3066, the Marauder III is an attempt to take the long proven GM Marauder
    chassis of the 75 ton Marauder and 100 ton Marauder II to develop a maneuverable and capable
    medium class unit.  Blackwell Industries of New Valencia having successfully adapted the
    Marauder frame over 50 years into an assault chassis sought to repeat this success but in
    the opposite direction.  Working from their existing designs, Blackwell carefully stripped
    down the chassis and redesigned actuators to increase the overall speed to 97.2 kph.
    
    To maintain performance, Blackwell was forced to reduce weight when possible via the
    selective use of advanced materials.  The largest weight savings resulted by exchanging the
    19 ton Vlar 300 with a 14.5 ton GM 300 Light fusion engine, reducing the engine mass by 4.5
    tons.  Furthermore, the standard GM chassis was stripped down to 5 tons and upgraded to
    endo-steel for a total of 5 tons of weight savings.  Lastly, 2 tons of Valiant Lamellor
    armor was removed as the stripped down chassis could no longer support the 11.5 tons of
    protection.  Resulting in a total weight savings of 11.5 tons from the frame.
    
    However, further weight savings was required in order to meet the targeted 25 ton total
    reduction in mass.  As such, the Blackwell team began altering the Marauder III's weapon
    package from that of the venerable MAD-1R.  Each of the Magna Hellstar PPCs were exchanged
    for the lighter Magna Bolt Light PPC; a reduction by over 50% in the primary weapon systems
    mass.  Next, the General Motors Whirldwind Class-5 Autocannon was exchanged for a Mydron
    Snakekiller Class-5 Light Autocannon; a further reduction of 3 tons.  For improved safety,
    the autocannon ammo bay was outfitted with cellular ammunition safety equipment to avoid the
    catastrophic destruction of the unit should the ammo bay get struck by enemy fire.  The twin
    Magna Mk II medium lasers were left unaltered.  Lastly, the cooling system was improved to
    double heat sinks and reduced by 6 tons, resulting in an overall improvement of the system
    by 125% despite the reduced size; further, when combined with the reduced heat burden of the
    new weapons package, the Marauder III can avoid heat issues in all but the most extreme
    situations.  These efforts resulted in a further 16.5 tons reduction in mass for a total
    reduction of 28 tons, 3 tons over the target savings.
    
    As such, Blackwell elected to build on one of their most successful modifications when
    designing the Marauder II and outfitted the Marauder III with 6 Chilton 360 light jump jets
    that grant the 'Mech the ability to leap an impressive 180 meters.  Further enhancing the
    'Mech's mobility to equal that of many of the most successful Medium class 'Mechs.  Overall,
    Blackwell Industries has managed to preserve the heart of the ancient Star League design
    while offering a strong competitor in the Medium 'Mech market.
