Overview:
Etna Industries had finally found success with their Fortalice super-heavy line of mechs,
200t behemoths that cost over 100,000,000 c-bills per unit. This price tag was putting off
many potential customers, often citing that building a Lance around the mech would be
unfeasable. To help address this, the company developed the Mandrake line of mechs,
ultralight designs capable of being carried by the Fortalice and deployed during attacks
against the mobile battlement. While extremely expensive for a traditional mech, they were
inexpensive compared to the super-heavy and thus often bundled as free equipment with the
Fortalice, meant to assist with battle armor deployment, repelling assaulting forces, and
act as an advanced scout and spotter.
Capabilities:
The base version of the Mandrake is built for a combination of speed and utility, capable
of reaching a top speed of 216 km/h or a sustained speed of 172.8 km/h by alternating its
MASC and Supercharger units. This allows the it to act as a Battle Armor transport, quickly
positioning these troops before taking on the role of a scout. To assist it in these
duties, it is equipped with a C3 Slave Computer and Light TAG system inorder to spot for
nearby forces. Lastly, it is equipped with a Flamer to allow for the creation of smoke
screens and as a potent anti-infantry option.
Inorder to have the weight for this and enough weaponry to threaten a flank, extreme weight
saving approaches were required. It was built with an Endo-Steel Structure and only 2 tons
of Ferro-Fibrous armor, able to reflect small caliber weapons but severely threatened by
even medium armarments. Additionally, it is equipped with an XL Engine and XL Gyro, making
it vulnerable to critical hits. Lastly, a small cockpit is employed to save just enough
weight to allow for a viable weapons array to be mounted.
Deployment:
The Mandrake is built for ease of transport. While supremely expensive due to expensive
weight saving technology, saving 25% off the weight of a Locust makes this a logistical ease
for commanders to redeploy. This is helped by its narrow profile and compact design taking
up minimal room compared to other battlemechs. This feature has made it a popular choice
for commanders that don't need to look at the reciepts and are trying to quickly move as
much force as possible onto a planet or location as they can.
These features were the main considerations in its design, as its intended role is to serve
as support for a Fortalice. That 200T mechs role is as a mobile fortress, carrying an
internal garrison of 12 Battle Armors and up to 100T of additional supplies. The Mandrake
is designed to minimize the reduction in carried supplies while remaining a legitimate
flanking threat. While docked within the Fortalice, the super-heavy design has three rumble
seats to allow for these mech warriors to rest and rotate with the normal crew inorder to
keep the Super-heavy moving without pause. When a Fortalice is assaulted, these can quickly
be deployed with the battle armor inorder to spot for the larger mechs impressive arsenal.
Variants:
Mandrake Prime: Designed for short range flanking attacks, its head is mounted with
two ER Small Lasers while its torso is equipped with two arrays of three light machine guns.
These weapons allowed it to just barely hit targets just outside of ECM fields, avoiding
interference with its C3 unit. BV2.0: 547. Cost: 4,785,294.
Mandrake A: This loadout was designed to give 50% increased range over the Prime
configuration. Its head is mounted with an Improved Heavy Medium Laser while its back is
loaded with three SRM-2 launchers. BV2.0: 677. Cost: 4,964,981.
Mandrake B: An itteration of the Mandrake-A configuration, it also uses an Improved
Heavy Medium Laser but this time has three AP Gauss Rifles mounted to its back, letting it
hunt infantry forces and a slightly higher damage output overall. BV2.0: 694. Cost:
4,964,981.
