Overview:
Etna Industries, a corporation known for experimental concepts and reverse engineered clan
technology, began its ultimate vanity project in the Fortalice. This was in response to
reports that a foreign corporation, Rhodes Industry, had finally made a commercially and
tactically viable Super-Heavy battlemech. Wanting to provide a domestically produced
alternative, Etna industries immediately began efforts to create their own version. While
the effort would take years to bear fruit, the final product remains their most nuanced and
complex design to date.
They took lessons from their predecessors, such as using a tripod design to allow for even
weight distribution and 360 torso twisting to address the threat of flankers. Engineers
also iterated on other concepts, not only having a three mechwarrior design but also the
inclusion of three “rumble seats” to allow pilots to rotate on 8 hour shifts. This
combined with internal space for the crew to rest and recover means that it can continuously
march to offset its low max speed, letting it keep pace with front line pushes.
This “open interior” also allowed for both troops and cargo to be internally carried by
the Fortalice. Up to 12 battle armor equipped infantry could ride within, though would need
to immediately exit upon combat to avoid being trapped within when armored hatches seal. It
was also equipped with two internal hoists to allow it to load and deploy a huge amount of
supplies and effectively act as a mobile supply depot for local forces.
Capabilities:
With 71 tons of Hardened Armor, the Fortalice has rear armor on par with most assault-class
mech's frontal defenses. This also gives it considerable resistance to piercing forms of
attack, meaning that, along with C.A.S.E. II protection, many enemies will simply lack the
firepower to engage this mech effectively. This allows it to use its array of clan-grade
long range weaponry with little concern for its own survivability.
Its primary offensive tools are two arm-mounted Arrow IV launchers, weapons capable of
immediately neutralizing many light to medium mechs in a single volley. These are supported
by four LRM-15 batteries equipped with Artemis IV guidance system, letting the FTL-1S deny
local airspace to anything that would try to harass it. To prevent these systems from being
disabled by jamming devices, it is equipped with three ECCM suites.
Deployment:
The Fortalice is at its best not being used as a traditional mech. Instead, it prefers when
it is miles away providing Arrow IV fire support to nearby battlefields. From here its
primary weakness of low speed is largely negated, though it does need to remain aware of
long ranged artillery threats with enough ammo to actually get through its defenses.
Aircraft are less of a concern as they will likely be under equipped to handle its large
number of LRM fire that can quickly down most aerospace fighters.
Despite this preference, the Fortalice is a highly tempting target for enemy ground forces
due to the sheer amount of loot it contains. In these scenarios it can struggle to bring
its weapons into direct line of sight of enemies due to its abysmal speed. Instead, it is
reliant on allies with TAG systems to give it indirect locks for its highly destructive
ordinance, letting it quickly obliterate even heavily armored mechs.
Variants:
FTL-1P: An earlier iteration of the Fortalice that struggled to incorporate the
internal hoists of later versions. This had one less ECM suite and five less tons of armor
in order to have two external lift hoists. BV2.0: 4,718. Cost: 367,178,000
FTL-1S: The first successful version of the Fortalice and largely considered the
standard, it boasted an incredible 80 tons of hardened armor, effectively having more rear
armor than most assault mechs had frontal defenses BV2.0: 4,819. Cost: 367,703,000
FTL-1T: This version replaces one ECM suite and five tons of armor for communication
equipment in its left torso, giving a total of 7 tons of equipment. This allowed it to
reliably establish satellite uplink and act as a mobile command center. BV2.0 4,718. Cost:
367,058,000.
FTL-1U: Itterating upon the -1T, the -1U retains the 75 tons of armor but is able to
remount its third ECM suite along with a C3 master computer. This allowed it to take
maximum advantage of its LRM batteries, speelling serious danger for anything marked by TAG
and wihtin short range of the C3 network. This also marked when Etna Industries began
bundling in three 15ton Tigerspot omni-mechs for free as battle armor transports for its
garrison, fitting snuggly in its cargo bays. BV2.0: 4,779. Cost: 371,978,000.
FTL-1V: With multiple reports of the Fortalice being far too expensive for it combat
role, engineers set out to create a version using the substantially cheaper XL engine,
reducing production cost by 66%. This required dropping down to "only" 71 tons of armor,
but made the mech able to continue operating even after a catastrophic side torso breach.
While better for preserving the mech, the associated loss of internal cargo led to some
debate if it still filled its intended role compared to the FTL-1S. BV2.0: 4,657. Cost:

Notable MechWarriors:
Lennox "T-T" Lane: When her unit was assigned to the new mech, Lennox was
immediately concerned. Beyond the poor reputation of Super-Heavy designs as a whole, being
assigned to a mech who's primary role was ranged support and utility did not sit well with
her. Her command was pushed through despite her protests and she found the mech a tedious
post at best. It was during one of her foul broodings when a lone locust decided to ambush
her mech. Its weaponry barely scratched its hull, but Lennox decided to vent her anger by
unleashing the entirety of her weaponry upon the unfortunate pilot. A responding support
crew saw this sheer overkill and soon Lennox was given the moniker of "Temper, Temper" based
on an old Terran story. Decades of command would eventually see "T-T" accept both her
nickname and even become fond of her walking-battleship and crew, becoming a matron to local
forces in any theater of war in which she found herself.
Quirks: the following Quirks are recommended if using these rules:
- Rumble Seat x3 (0 points x 3): spots to allow for passengers
- Poor Performance (-3 points): Cannot Run
- Internal Garrison - Custom: (+1 point) when using the Mechanized Battle Armor
rules, battle armor infantry can be considered to be carried internally while riding this
mech.
- Internal Hoists - Custom x 2 (+1 point x 2): this mech can carry cargo as if it
had a Lift Hoists equipped, treating anything carried by these as being carried internally.
Can be taken up to two times, though cannot exceed the maximum of 2 total lift hoists.

The FTL-1P does not have the Internal Hoist quirk.
The FTL-1T version also gains the “Command Mech” quirk.
