================================================================================================
Overview:
Designed to be an extremely fast-moving and nearly invisible scout that can relay battle
info to friendlies, with extra capabilities to Ambush select targets. A favorite tactic is
to either sneak up on targets, then do a Death From Above, or jump over and then shoot the
target from behind, preferably in the head, usually destroying the target or coming very
close to it, then running away, while engaging the Null Signature System guerrilla warfare
style.
Capabilities:
A Null Signature System combined with a Chameleon LPS, making the Mech darn near
undetectable, and light defensive weapons with some sabotage and ambush/sabotage capability.
Introduced in 2464 as an attempt by General Mechanics to create a fast and maneuverable
recon BattleMech for the Terran Hegemony, the Wasp was revolutionary for being the first
'Mech capable of jumping, sporting a prototype jump jet system; however, the system was not
perfected for most of the next decade.[20][21] After improvements in production and jump jet
technology progressed, the modern WSP-1A Wasp began production in 2471. Centuries later, it
is still considered a valued asset for recon work and is one of the most numerous 'Mechs in
existence.[22]
The initial design was built without monomolecular stress-resistant materials (MMSR) in the
lower leg actuator. This wasn't identified as a flaw until the 2580 Battle of Imbros III
when many Wasp MechWarriors practiced the jump-kick maneuver. After performing the maneuver
even once, so much stress was put on the actuator that any subsequent jump-kicks immediately
amputated the lower leg upon impact. By 2610 nearly all Wasps had been retrofitted with MMSR
actuator bars.[22][23]
The classic WSP-1A has a ground speed that could be considered lackluster when compared to
many modern light 'Mechs, but this was offset by its jump capability. While carrying heavier
weapons than 'Mechs like the Locust, the Wasp would generally only engage other light
'Mechs, using its jump capabilities to avoid conflicts with larger foes. The Wasp was also
used in the role of raider because of its ability to hit and fade in rough terrain.[18][22]
Even after the sheer destruction of the Succession Wars, the Wasp still remained the most
numerous 'Mech ahead of the Locust and Stinger; many thousands were in use by all of the
Great Houses and in the Periphery while 100 or more were built each year from factories
across known space. Nearly half of all newly built Wasps came from IBMU's and Kali Yama's
factories located in the Free Worlds League on Shiro III and Kalidasa respectively. Among
other major Inner Sphere Wasp manufacturing sites were Defiance Industries' Furillo factory
in the Lyran Commonwealth and Achernar BattleMechs on New Avalon in the Federated Suns. Many
of the Great Houses had Wasp variants built specifically for them, as did Wolf's Dragoons.
Even out in the Periphery the Wasp was manufactured on Taurus, Perdition, Canopus IV and
Alpheratz, making it equally common among the Periphery States.[18][24]
The reintroduction of Star League lostech was used to update the ancient design with modern
improvements, starting first with the WSP-1S built by Defiance for the Federated
Commonwealth. This was followed by the new WSP-3W built specifically for Wolf's Dragoons by
Achernar, then the WSP-3M built by IBMU and Kali Yama.[24] Another wave of updates came when
Vicore Industries began to peddle their "Project Phoenix" program and found a willing buyer
in Hellespont Industries. Requiring only minor changes to their production line, the new
WSP-3L was more mobile and more stealthy; it debuted in late July of 3067, and the Capellan
Confederation Armed Forces used it alongside new Raven and Phoenix Hawk models to form
Shadow Lances. Taurus Territorial and Detroit Consolidated also began building these new
Wasps under license from Hellespont, while Defiance designed their own updated version of
the Wasp, the WSP-3S, which was then licensed to Achernar.[25]
The largest producer of Wasps in the League Irian BattleMechs Unlimited, and by extension
the Inner Sphere, declined to take part in "Project Phoenix" and continued producing the
classically-themed WSP-3M unabated, until weakening sales after the Jihad and the formation
of the Republic of the Sphere led them to develop the faster though similarly armed WSP-5A,
proving popular even in the ilClan era. After its capture by Clan Wolf, its fellow League
manufacturer Kali Yama went in the other direction, with the Wolf Empire maintaining its
classic speed to increase its firepower dramatically via heavier Clan-tech.[11]
Deployment:
Weapons and Equipment:
Usually used as a Scout or infiltrator to sabotage mechs and or structures.
The WSP-1A Wasp was not designed as a line combat unit. It carries a light weapons payload
meant primarily for self-defense against other light 'Mechs and was not meant to engage
heavier 'Mechs, resulting in tactics such as the jump-kick in order to deal more damage. The
primary weapon is a Diverse Optics Type 2 medium laser carried in the right arm, backed up
by a Bical SRM-2 launcher that is curiously mounted in the left leg which can carry 45
reloads of standard or Inferno rounds in the left torso, making it useful against enemy
'Mechs and a good deterrent against infantry and vehicles.[22][18] Published schematics
indicate that the leg-mounted SRM-2 launcher is located near the hip (see Notes).
The six jump jets, split between the Wasp's legs and torso sections, are responsible for its
jumping distance of 180 meters and its longevity as a recon 'Mech. These also make up for
the relatively slow 66.5 km/h cruising speed produced by its four-ton fusion engine. 10
single heat sinks are more than enough for the Wasp - it can actually fire both of its
weapon systems continuously with little to no issue unless the jump jets have been overused.
The three tons of armor protection is average for light 'Mechs, and with its placement
around the chassis essentially two shots to the same spot anywhere will punch through and
cause damage.[22]
This particular variant uses:
(1) Emerald Sunglow Enhanced Focus located in the Right Arm,
(2) Defiance Sting Guided 2nd Gen Located respectively in each Left and Right Torsos with a
full extra ton of ammo protected with CASE II,
and utilizes Null Signature System combined with A Chameleon LPS that can run constantly
with the jump jets and fully firing all weapons almost nonstop and never overheat because of
the 13-clan tech double heatsinks. making for a very nasty surprise package for any
unsuspecting target of this BattleMech.
Variants:
Variants:
WSP-1
Developed by General Mechanics on Mars in 2464 as the first generation Wasp, this version
used several primitive components. The primitive engine reduced the top speed to 85 km/h and
meant that only a single medium laser was carried, the prototype jump jets could only cover
150 meters in a jump, and the primitive armor provided much less protection than the later
Succession Wars-era Wasps, even though it carried three and a half tons of armor.[20]
WSP-1D
Developed in response to logistical attrition during the later years of the First Succession
War, this Federated Suns variant developed in 2823 exchanges the SRM-2 launcher for two
ChisComp 32 small lasers in the left torso and an Olympian flamer in the left leg. While
firing these additional weapons leads to an increased heat output, it is not enough to pose
a serious risk.[22][18][26] BV (1.0) = 327; BV (2.0) = 403[27]
WSP-1K
Another variant intended to ease logistical requirements as the First Succession War dragged
on, the Draconis Combine's 1K Wasp was introduced in 2818, improving protection while
sacrificing firepower.[22] It retains the medium laser but replaces the SRM-2 launcher with
a Sperry Browning machine gun and one ton of ammunition in the left torso. The saved weight
was used to upgrade the armor by half a ton.[18][26] BV (1.0) = 330; BV (2.0) = 376[28]
WSP-1L
A variant of the Wasp produced by Hellespont for Capellan Confederation in 2799, the 1L
replaced the medium laser and SRM-2 launcher with a single Holly SRM-4 launcher carried in
the right arm supplied with a single ton of reloads in the right torso. Envisioning a
variant highly adaptable to the raiding actions of the First Succession War, the Capellan
Strategios deployed the 1L with multiple munition types based on their intended mission
role, such as incendiary or gas SRMs for anti-infantry support or smoke SRMs for recon
concealment. The reduction in overall firepower made the 1L an adequate though not
spectacular combatant.[22][18][26] BV (1.0) = 290; BV (2.0) = 335[29]
WSP-1S
The Federated Commonwealth's model of choice starting in 3049, Defiance Industries of
Furillo upgraded the chassis to endo steel and the armor to three and a half tons of
ferro-fibrous. This variant uses the weight savings to carry a medium pulse laser in its
right arm, two Defiance B3S small lasers in the right torso, and a Zippo flamer in the left
torso.[24] BV (1.0) = 336; BV (2.0) = 423[30]
WSP-1W
Associated with Wolf's Dragoons and debuting in 3009, the 1W Wasp replaced all of the
weapons with six small lasers, two each split between the right arm, right torso, and left
torso. While sacrificing long-range capability this gives the 1W superior close-range
firepower.[22][18] BV (1.0) = 316; BV (2.0) = 373[31]
WSP-3A
Developed by the Outworlds Alliance in 3082, the 3A was armed with a single medium pulse
laser. It also utilizes endo steel and an XL gyro to save weight. While using a smaller
engine, its reduced ground speed was offset by improved jump jets allowing it to jump 240
meters at a time.[32] It also includes a Full-Head Ejection System. BV (2.0) = 401[33]
WSP-3K
This variant was introduced in the Dark Age era. It carries a single medium laser and an
MRM-10 into combat on an endo steel frame. It uses an XL engine and 10 single heat sinks.
Most importantly, it's equipped with a Full Head Ejection System to protect the pilot. BV
(2.0) = 477[34]
WSP-3L
Developed by Vicore Industries from Word of Blake plans and manufactured by Hellespont
Industrials of Sian, TTI on Taurus, and DCM on Detroit, the 3L variant uses the Capellan
Confederation's new stealth armor and a Hellespont Type W Endo Steel chassis to make it more
stealthy, mobile and survivable. Four tons of Hellespont Lite Stealth Armor provide superior
protection and, along with a Guardian ECM suite, makes it harder to locate and hit the Wasp.
The six jump jets were also relocated to the rear torso to better protect them and decrease
cost. A Diverse Optics ER medium laser is carried in the right arm and a Death Bloom RL-10
is mounted in the right torso; the inclusion of a Marian weapon to the 'Mech was
controversial but nevertheless provided additional firepower. Despite other improvements,
the 3L variant still carries 10 single heat sinks, a cost-cutting measure to take advantage
of the Capellans' massive stockpile of these components. For communications this variant
mounts a Hellespont Tight Beam system and a RadCom TXXI for targeting-tracking.[1] It is
also equipped with a Full Head Ejection System.[35] First appearing in 3067, the WSP-3L was
the first model featuring the new "Project Phoenix" makeover. BV (1.0) = 441; BV (2.0) =
610[35]
WSP-3M
The post–Helm Memory Core House Marik variant introduced in 3051, the 3M Wasp upgrades the
chassis to Irian Chassis Second Generation Class 20 endo steel and the armor to
ferro-fibrous. This variant carries an Intek medium pulse laser in its right arm and a
single Irian Weapons Works SRM-2 launcher in the right torso with CASE for the ammunition.
The variant is also equipped with the potent Irian E.A.R. communications system and the
Wasat Aggressor targeting-tracking system.[24] [11] Widely popular, IBMU saw little need to
mess with the rugged and dependable WSP-3M for many years, and while no longer manufactured
since before the Dark Age era the company buys back existing models to refurbish and resell
to those who cannot afford its top-tier WSP-5A.[11] BV (1.0) = 346; BV (2.0) = 394[36]
WSP-3P
Another Dark Age era variant, this model has a top speed of 110 km/h and can cover 210
meters in a jump. It's also equipped with a Full-Head Ejection System. For offensive
operations it carries an ER medium laser and a RL-10. BV (2.0) = 537[37]
WSP-3S
The Lyran Alliance's Project Phoenix rebuild, the 3S variant of the Wasp introduced in 3067
upgrades the engine to a light version and carries two ER medium lasers, a Full-Head
Ejection System, a Guardian ECM suite, and a TAG target designator. Defiance also licensed
this version to Achernar on New Avalon.[1] BV (1.0) = 584; BV (2.0) = 595[38]
WSP-3W
Manufactured by Achernar for Wolf's Dragoons in 3050, the Clan Invasion era 3W upgraded the
armor to ferro-fibrous and carried two Sutel Precision Line small pulse lasers in the right
arm and four ChisComp 32 small lasers split between left leg and left torso. This increased
firepower came at the cost of reducing armor protection to just two tons.[24] BV (1.0) =
276; BV (2.0) = 342[39][23]
WSP-3X
A failed Irian BattleMechs Unlimited variant designed under the supervision of Herbert
Sampson, this model built on the 3M with upgrades to an XL engine and XL gyro. It was armed
with two Thunderbolt 5 launchers and a medium laser, and it used compact heat sinks. The
weight of the new systems necessitated a reduction to a minimal two tons of armor, and due
to high cost and poor performance, the project was scrapped in 3091. BV (2.0) = 521.[40]
WSP-4W
A replacement for the 3W, Wolf's Dragoons deployed this improved model shortly before the
Jihad began due to negative combat experiences with its predecessor. Protection is increased
to three tons of ferro-fibrous armor and it is powered by a light fusion engine with 10
double heat sinks. The right arm and left torso are equipped with ER medium lasers and a
pair of small pulse lasers are installed in the left leg. BV (2.0) = 551[41]
WSP-5A
Produced after the Dark Age began, this Wasp variant uses an Magna Mk VI ER medium laser and
Holly Streak SRM-2 as its weaponry. The Streak ammo is protected by CASE II while the armor
is ferro-fibrous. This variant uses an Hermes 160 XL engine to reach speeds of 120 km/h, and
eight jump jets are attached to the Irian Chassis Fourth Generation Class 20 endo-composite
frame to allow 240 meter jumps. BV (2.0) = 517[42]
WSP-7MAF
This 3071 variant uses an XL engine on a Hellespont Type W endo steel frame to propel the
Wasp up to 129 km/h. It also mounts enough jump jets to match, with a maximum range of 240
meters per jump. It has to use this speed to good effect, as it is only protected by three
tons of Jolassa 328 armor. The right arm medium laser was upgraded to a Diverse Optics ER
medium laser, and the design uses 10 double heat sinks to dissipate waste heat. Finally, a
Doombud MML-5 with two tons of ammunition gives it a decent punch at all ranges. In order to
make room for these upgrades, a small cockpit and XL gyro are also used. Despite the unit
designation, the design was manufactured by all three members of the Trinity Alliance at
Hellespont Industries, Taurus Territorial Industries, and Detroit Consolidated
MechWorks.[32] BV (2.0) = 488[43]
WSP-8T
Manufactured by Hellespont and Detroit Consolidated in 3075, the 8T carries a single MML-3
and a light PPC to increase the Wasp's effective range. The increased size of the weaponry
forced designers to use a small cockpit and XL engine. BV (2.0) = 439[44]
Wasp C
Produced by Wolf Empire techs, this 'Mech uses a unique blend of Clan and Inner Sphere
technology. The engine, gyro, endo steel chassis, and jump jets are Inner Sphere quality,
while the Type-1 ferro-fibrous armor, double heat sinks, and weapons are Clan grade. The
right arm carries a mammoth Clan Series 6b ER large laser while the left leg has a
Clan-built Pattern J2 Improved One Shot Streak SRM-2. The laser's long range is particularly
useful, as the Wasp C has ground speed and jump radius of Succession Wars era Wasps. BV
(2.0) = 755[42][11]
Apocryphal Variants:
two unnamed consecutive modifications that 'Mech techs would perform on WSP-1A at
MechIt-Lubes on Chara III, with the impression given that they are standardized and common
modifications that are frequently made as of 3028:
WSP-2A Super Wasp - Although it carried the designation WSP-2A, this is arguably not a
variant but rather a new 'Mech design based on the regular Wasp in a similar fashion to IIC
evolutions of existing designs, albeit without Clan level technology. The Super Wasp weighs
in at 25 tons, 25% more than its predecessor.
Wasp LAM - A heavy modification of the Wasp, it was capable of transforming between a 'Mech
and an aerospace fighter. The most successful of the LAMs, it is nonetheless very rare and
hard to use, and is almost unseen by the thirty-first century. While the Wasp has seen many
variants and production over the years, the LAM model was only briefly produced.
"First Modification"
SRM-2 and ammunition exchanged for one medium laser in the left leg and a ton of armor (+4
to head, +4 to center torso, +3 to each leg, +2 to each side torso and -2 to center
torso/rear)
"Second Modification"
In addition to the first modification, all jump jets are exchanged for three medium lasers,
with one each installed in the head, center torso, and left arm.
The Marek Zabielski dossier, from the MechWarrior: Dark Age Counterassault set, cites an
unknown variant of the Wasp with serial number DA4350-11L. This Wasp has been equipped with
endo steel, a 120-rated XL engine, jump jets, an ER medium laser, and an LRM 10 launcher. It
was noted as being customized with Clan technology and is likely a one-off customization.

History
A native of David, Cater piloted IndustrialMechs before the Raiders recruited him. Some
people attribute his good nature to a defense mechanism, to mask his lackluster combat
skills, as his ability with a 'Mech is rudimentary and he has a track record for being
defeated in combat. He served in the Recon "Clowns" Lance under Mavis Morgan[1]

Chantal Jackson was a major in command of Second Battalion, McClure's Hive.[1]
Chantal Jackson was a MechWarrior in the Magistracy Armed Forces who was assigned a new
WSP-3L Wasp in 3068. Along with several others in the MAF, she grew disillusioned with the
increasing ties between the Magistracy and Capellan Confederation. After discussing the
matter with Major Elliria McClure, she elected to defect and in 3069 two reinforced
battalions' worth of other MAF members and Dispossessed formed McClure's Hive on Herotitus.
Jackson was made the executive officer and commander of Second Battalion. During a
subsequent contract on Diik in the Calderon Protectorate, pirates staged a raid on the
Protectorate Arms Conglomerate. Jackson led her worker company to locate the landing zone
and then harried their DropShips until they boosted for orbit without their pirate crew.
Jackson set an ambush for the pirate 'Mechs expecting to return to their vessels and
exterminated the pirate force, but at the cost of two lances.[1]

a Wasp simply to fill a billet so the unit would continue to qualify for company-strength
contracts. After his unit was devastated by Clan Jade Falcon he used his legal acumen to
ensure the unit was fully indemnified against the losses, which included a brand-new WSP-3W
for himself.[1]

Malone was a member of Cushing's Scout Lance of McGee's Cutthroats, and was noted as one of
the best trackers in the Inner Sphere, and an expert in 'Mech camouflage. His mission was
generally shadowing enemy formations prior to battle, in order to gather intel.
Malone was also known for refusing promotions, as he preferred to continue in his role as a
scout.[1][2]
BattleMech
Malone piloted a Wasp BattleMech named Nightshroud. Malone personally repainted his 'Mech in
appropriate camo patterns after every campaign.[1][2]
Notes
Ross Malone was also the name of a Waco Rangers Shilone pilot in the TO&E published in
Challenge Magazine as a preview for Mercenary's Handbook. When the information was
officially released, the pilot was changed to Ross Lamone.

unnatural mastery of movement.[1][2]
In December 3151 she participated in a reconnaissance-in-force raid to probe Capellan

Rank Tai-i
Profession MechWarrior
Mercer Ravannion was a MechWarrior from the Draconis Combine, holding the rank of Tai-i
(Captain) in the DCMS from 3019 (at the latest) until his death in 3023.
Ravannion was a three-time DCMS Ballroom Dancing Champion, a collector of porcelain cat
statues, and a loving family man.[2]
However, he's most known for his "Charge of the Horde" tactic which postulated that large
numbers of small, individually weak BattleMechs could overwhelm more powerful 'Mechs through
sheer numbers. To this end he suggested forming "hordes" of six to ten light 'Mechs,
preferrably Stingers and Wasps, instead of the traditional lances. He reasoned that these
could be built relatively cheap and easy, and deploying them in large numbers would also
make it easier to repair and maintain them. Furthermore, most damage was expected to be
relatively light and thus most casualties would be damaged 'Mechs that could be repaired.
Driven by fanaticism, Tai-i Ravannion led three such swarming attacks without regard for men
or matériel, invariably suffering disastrous defeats. Despite these military setbacks, he
insisted that his tactics were sound.
Defending Fallon II against elements of the Seventh Crucis Lancers in 3019, he led four
Stingers and two Wasps (including his own) against the scout lance of McKinnon's Raiders at
the Battle of Markerson, losing all six 'Mechs and escaping only after ejecting from his
disabled 'Mech.[3] The Twelfth Star Guards mercenary unit had been ordered to contribute a
Stinger to the attack, and had sent a Shadow Hawk along as an impartial observer (and for
safety), the only unit to survive the attempt.[1] It was noted that no House was
subsequently prepared to risk 'Mechs on his theories.
In 3022 he attacked Xhosa VII, where he unleashed a full battalion of Wasps and some
Stingers against the understrength planetary garrison which consisted of two companies of
the Draconis March Militia equipped mostly with Locusts and Blackjacks. The attack was
repulsed by the inexperienced, freshly graduated Cadet Captain Michael Ubodo who earned
himself a decoration and demonstrated on the sidelines that even ill-reputed 'Mechs like the
Blackjack can shine when used properly. Ravannion's troops retreated to their DropShips in
disorder.[4][5]
In 3023, Ravannion was killed in another encounter with McKinnon's Raiders on Fallon II.[4]
Stinger pilot Marge Sippers served under Ravannion when she was 16 years old. Rumored to
have a schoolgirl crush on her mentor, she rose to the rank of Tai-i herself after his death
and redeemed the "Charge of the Horde" tactic by including somewhat heavier units,
especially Jenners. She would later found a museum in his honor.[6][2]
Fifty-seven years after Mercer Ravannion's death, one pirate king Ravannion of Tortuga Prime
would reportedly claim to be his descendant according to a dubious tale; the validity of
this claim — and even of the tale as such — remains unconfirmed.[7]
In 3140 the mercenary unit Ravannion's Redemption appeared in the St. Ives Commonality
employing several Koshi BattleMechs, suggesting a philosophical connection to Tai-i Mercer
if not a direct relation.[8][9]
BattleMech
Ravannion piloted a Wasp.[2]
Notes
Mercer Ravannion's obsession with an apparently hopeless tactical theory and his frequent
defeats border on comic relief and have made the character popular among BattleTech fans,
though save for being mentioned in one boardgame scenario he was already dead when the
character was fleshed out.
Technical Readout: 3025 mentions Tai-i Ravannion in two separate entries (for the Stinger
and Blackjack, respectively) and gives the distinct impression that Ravannion's "Charge of
the Horde" is an unsound tactic; similarly, the book's entry for the Atlas claims that a
single Atlas could defeat an entire battalion of Stingers as credible. However, despite the
descriptions ridiculing Ravannion's theory, it should be noted that game mechanics appear to
prove him right: "Charge of the Horde" tactics (also known as "swarming") do in fact have
merit under regular boardgame rules, where they are quite effective.
Field Manual: Mercenaries, Revised mentions that the mercenary group Markson's Marauders are
"one of the only commands" to use the "once debunked tactics of Captain Mercer Ravannion",
suggesting that these tactics could be successful with some modification and appropriate use
- Markson's Marauders are noted to be proficient pirate hunters, for example, but also use
heavier fast 'Mechs. Their swarm tactics also require risking expensive DropShips for proper
deployment.
Technical Readout: 3039 repeats most of the text from TRO: 3025 and calls Ravannion's
theories "discredited". It also mentions Tai-i Sippers and how she achieved surprising
victories using the Charge of the Horde with Jenners. However, it should be noted that this
considerably dilutes the original concept: at 35 tons, Jenners are almost twice as heavy as
Ravannion's preferred 20-ton 'Mechs and significantly more powerful (being noted as a
particularly heavily armed design) but also considerably more expensive, defeating the
original premise of the "Charge of the Horde" as a way to make use of individually weak but
cheap units.

Aldwin was a spoilt and rambunctious youth, kept out of trouble by his mother Allison
Stewart's connections, which came from her position as Planetary Governor of Callison.
Finally growing tired of Aldwin antics however, Allison had Aldwin sent to military school,
hoping to teach him self-discipline. While Aldwin did learn some degree of discipline and
humility, it was stereotypical MechWarrior arrogance soon replaced it. Some of that
arrogance was however justified, as he was given command of a Principes Guards Lance, with
only a minimum of string-pulling.[1]
BattleMech
Stewart piloted a WSP-3K Wasp BattleMech, nicknamed "Golden Goose", serial number
DC5210-37G. O5P records show this 'Mech was listed as destroyed during the Jihad, but it
miraculously reappeared with Draconis Combine forces making a raid on Galtor III almost 40
years later, where it was captured by the Federated Suns. It was sold to the Republic as
salvage by the Suns in 3129.[1]

History
Woods was a second-generation Solaris VII Arena MechWarrior with the Blackstar Stables, who

persona ended and the woman began. When Black Star dropped her in favor of more respectable
talent, she fought at the lower levels for a year before being recruited to the Swordsworn,

maintained her celebrity lifestyle even in her reduced circumstances, particularly her
outrageous libertine vices.[1]
BattleMech
Woods piloted a WASP-3L Wasp, nicknamed "Man-Eater", with the serial number FW1576-12G. It
