Overview:
Designed as a fire support vehicle for reconnaissance units, the prototype
Panther was first built for the Star League during the closing years of the
Cameron dynasty. The current model, the 9R, is a compromise developed by
Combine engineers.
Though lacking the original Panther's sophistication, its systems are more
adaptable to present-day factories.
House Liao has also been a prominent user of the Panther, however they have never devoted
a production line to the mech till now.
Capabilities:
The Panther's main function is fire support for light and fast-moving
Mech units. It has played this role for almost 300 years, providing covering fire for more
mobile 'Mechs who are in mid-maneuver, whether toward or away from the enemy.
Its PPC is unusual for a 'Mech of its size. An extraordinary weapon, the
Lord's Light PPC combines the firepower of a standard PPC with the lightness and flexibility
of an arm-carried weapon. The weapon's designers only partially solved the problem of
reducing the number of coolant tubes needed to pass from the 'Mech through access navels of
the right hand and elbow into the weapon, however. Many MechWarriors report that rugged use,
such as hand-to-hand combat or bashing buildings, often pinches off the coolant tubes at the
navel. This creates overheating, which in turn causes the weapon to shut down.
For House Liao's variant, they decided to do away with trying to make the PPC so compact.
Always pragmatists when it comes to producing new mechs, the Liao technicians decided to do
away with the right hand actuator all together and mount the long proven Smasher PPC used on
their Vindicators instead. This handily solved the delicacy issues with the Lord's Light PPC
used on the Combine Panthers as well as utilizing a locally produced weapon. For close-in
work, the Panther carries four SRM tubes with enough ammunition for 25 shots. The reliable
Telos system is placed in the Mech's chest area, which ensures it good protection.
Not wishing to import anything they did not have to, Liao contacted the
designers of the Sian\Jaguar LRM5 and commissioned them to make a new rugged SRM 4 for the
mech.
Taking advice from their pilots, the engineers looked at the possibility of adding a
backup weapon for when they run out of missiles and CASE, to protect the ammo.
Realizing that they were now looking at a full redesign to accommodate the Capellan made
weapons as well as the requested changes in weapon loads, they decided to build a new
chassis from the ground up rather than endlessly tinkering with the standard version.
At this point they decided to go with an endo steel skeleton. Tests showed that this
weight savings was going to allow the mech to upgrade the engine to an OMNI 175. This
increased the walking speed to a respectable 54 kph. This would allow the new mech to keep
up with the faster recon mechs of today. This also gave them the chance to incorporate
double strength heat sinks into the design and do away
with the 3 extra heat sinks originally mounted on the right arm.
With the changes in the skeleton and the modifications to the chassis, the mech took on a
new look that prompted the Capellans to rename the design. It was decided to stick with a
cat based name since the new mech had a definite feline look to it. The Leopard; or Tai Lung
in Chinese, was determined to be a perfectly suitable name for their mech while keeping with
the Xin Sheng movement.
Now the Capellans had a homemade light fire support mech with more protection and bite
than any other currently produced mechs in the same class. The Tai Lung should be stalking
the fields of battle soon and looks to make enemies of House Liao regret trespassing on
their soil.
Deployment:
Currently the Tai Lung is being deployed to the Capellan Reserves to fill gaps in units that
have not received upgrade packages for their Mechs. This gesture was made to ensure that all
levels of the CCAF felt they were important to the Strategos and the Chancellor.
Variants:
The LE0-1B variant was offered as a defender unit for a lance of standard LE0-1D models.
This unit differs from the main version by replacing the PPC with a Large Laser, swapping
the SRM 4 with a Sian Jaguar LRM5 for long range and adding an Anti-Missile System. This
also allowed the maximum armor possible on the frame. One in every 4 units is the B model to
give the lance both better long range and close range capabilities.
