A rather weird upgrade. I´ve never understand why designers put a narc-launcher and LRMs together on one chassis. What should the pilot do? Close with the enemy to narc him and then retreating to optimal LRM-range? I don´t think that a narced target will sit and wait until the Archer moved back in position. The pulse lasers are fine to counter attacks of light harassers and backbiters but that 100 shots of Streak ammo have to be reduced. |

Bah the Fed Com and their XL engine fetish. This one is probably just to show case as many shiny toys they can squeeze into an Archer, but it does not make it anymore effective. In fact it got worst. |

Hmm, all the good ideas were concentrated in the 4M and 5R configurations and then they looked for some place to install the bad ones. Let's see... they went for a XL engine, no problem with that, the Archer has the armour to keep it safe and the chassis wasn't meant to be in the thick of the action, but what they did with the weapons defies all reason and logic. They DOWNGRADED the LRMs (or failed to upgrade them, depends on what you take as a basic chassis), wasted additional tonnage on short ranged pulse lasers and small streak SRMs (equally useless). Perhaps they heard that the Dervish is sometimes called 'Poor man's Archer' and decided to give the 5S the same short range firepower (including the insane SRM ammo load). What for? And then the idea to put a Narc launcher on the chassis which forces the 'Mech to come closer if it wants to benefit from it. I have no idea what is the concept behind this 'Mech, if there is any at all, but as I see it the 5S archer is close to having twelve tons of dead weight and a glass jaw. You don't want me to rate this positively, do you? |

I'm gonna agree with Blackhand and mud on this one. It's just got too much short range firepower and too little armor for the XL Engine. |

Out of the Archer's in this era, the 5S is the most fragile, and the weirdest setup with the Narc system. Narc always struck me as a light mech system.
I'd argue the Pulses are a bad idea because it encourages getting close enough your inside your LRM minimum, rather than regular lasers which can be fired outside minimum of LRM range.
The Streaks are a nice touch but really aren't worth going XL for. |
