I like this mech even if its far from perfect. I´ve had so much success with AC/2 that this mech makes me smile. I see the AC´s as a plus here and not as a disadvantage. But on the other side it has some flaws: The ER-lasers run much too hot to use them together and its armor is somewhat light. As it is not designed to take an enemy headon but to support from afar and so the armor isn´t that much of a problem. It is a mech to be used in major engagement where it can be kept at range while others do the heavy fighting. The smaller its units is the more it is in danger to be drawn closer to the fighting. In a duel its chances are very small.

Wow this is just a really bad design. It has all long range weapons, and not nearly enough heat sinks, so you're either going to be not using some of you weapons or you're going to be running really, really hot. And then it has the deadly combination of an XL engine and light armor on a mech packed with ammo. Seriously this mech is like piloting a walking fireworks stand. Also, A/C 2s are the worst weapon in the game in my opinion. The four on the Mauler and their ammo weighs 26 tons and does a grand total of 8 damage maximum.
I think just about anyone can see how to tremendously improve this mech. Take out the worthless XL engine and even more worthless a/c 2s then add armor, CASE, and double heat sinks first and foremost. And after that add whatever you want with the remaining tonnage. Artemis IV and a few medium lasers maybe? |

Lots of potential, if your interested in a Mauler worth using. Look in the custom page for mine. Not worth using as it stands. Too much cost for a set of weapons you could get on an Archer and a Jager mech. for many less c-bills. |

The AC/2s just do not work for me on this 'mech. It also needs more armor. If you want to increase the capability to inflict long-range critical hits, just upgrade the LRM launchers to 20s and add Artemis. |

At first, I didnt really take this mech seriously. Then I looked at the ranges of the weapons. The AC 2's can strike at a range slightly longer than the LRMs. While that may not seem like a big deal to do a big 2 points of damage.
On the other hand, the damage isnt the reason for the AC's. The cannons are there to provide an additonal chance of a critical hit at long range. Between the LRMs and the ACs, you stand a fair chance of scoring a critical hit.
Using CASE to protect an IS XL engine doesnt make much sense, as an ammo explosion will still destroy the engine. But its the 3050's and the houses were just aching for a chance to use any new technology at all. Also, it let the DCMS mount more of everything on this mech.
The armor, to me, seems a bit thin for a 90 ton assault mech. Still, it can take a solid shot from an AC 20 without giving completely.
The ammo is nice, though going with one ton of AC ammo for both guns might have been a better choice. Thats alot of ammo to have laying around when the fighting really picks up. |
