Overview:
Shortly after the FedCom Civil War, the AFFS commissioned a new Marauder variant from GM
BattleMechs. This 'Mech was to aid in the rebuilding of the AFFS by being both powerful and
inexpensive. Unlike most new Marauders, the MAD-8D mounts a standard fusion engine, instead
of an XL engine. While the standard engine cuts down on the available tonnage for weapons,
it also cuts the Marauder's cost by more than half. To free up some of the tonnage lost to
the engine, the MAD-8D is built with an Endo Steel internal structure. Some have complained
that this goes against the 8D's purpose of being inexpensive, but the fact of the matter is
that the MAD-8D is intended to be simply less expensive, not least expensive.
Capabilities:
Like most modern Marauders, the MAD-8D's primary armament is a pair of ER PPCs mounted in
its arms. A pair of ER medium lasers is mounted below the PPCs, to provide greater firepower
at closer ranges. The 8D's standard engine is heavy enough that mounting the usual
autocannon on the Marauder's back was impractical. Nor could the chassis mount sufficient
extra heat sinks to make an energy weapon feasible. So the MAD-8D instead mounts a Streak
SRM 6 above the cockpit, a weapon chosen because it is both light-weight and cool running.
The Streak SRM also give the Marauder a unique, somewhat stunted appearance. Instead of the
long barrel of an autocannon or laser, the 8D has a boxy missile rack above the cockpit.
The standard fusion engine, heavy armor, and CASE equipment combine to make the MAD-8D very
survivable, and it can shrug off all but the heaviest of damage. It is expected that this
extra toughness will be enough to balance the MAD-8D's lighter firepower.
Deployment:
MAD-8Ds are being deployed to frontline RCTs and independent 'Mech regiments as fast as they
can be produced and shipped. While the 8D is not intended to replace the MAD-7D, the
Department of the Quartermaster plans to cease purchase of the expensive 7D until the AFFS
is back up to an acceptable level of strength.

It lost AC, but it still may be the MAD. Standard engine makes it durable, even if the speed is just average. Armor is thick for Marauder chassis, but I would prefer standard lasers for better heat management. ECM makes nice addition to mech's arsenal.

Nice one.
I don't see how this has less firepower. It still packs a punch and has good armour and heat venting ability to boot.
This is a real Battlemech, one able to take a massive pounding and still fight on.
Have it in your frontlines, its the only place it deserves to be in.

I like it, the SSRM and the Mediums might seem like poor support weapons but they take advantage of the ERPPC's punch very well.
I could see this fulfilling the Marauders usual role, but also playing a more supportive role of Mediums and heavies.
