Overview:
One of the first battlemech designs upgraded by the SLDF was the workhorse of the medium
divisions, the Centurion. The upgrade took a battlemech already well regarded as one of the
toughest fighters in the divisions of the SLDF and improved it in many ways.
Capabilities:
Like the other 'mechs of the 17 series, the CN9-17 retains it's original power plant and
internal structure; other systems underwent significant changes however. The AC/10 was
upgraded to an LB-10X, giving it the ability to better support the LRM rack in a long range
bombardment. THe LRM system itself had to be moved to the right side of the 'mech. Due to
weight considerations only one side of the 'mech's torso could be equipped with CASE, and it
proved impossible to design a reliable feed system for moving LRMs from the magazine in the
right torso to the LRM system in the left that could easily and cheaply be carried out in
the field.
Deployment:
A practical upgrade, the CN9-17 was popular in the 'mech divisions of the SLDF, and since
it's rediscovery by scientists at the Curtiss Institute of Applied Technology on Oriente
some units in Marik service have taken to modifying old CN9-A Centurions to the new
configuration.

This is waay better than that 50s deathtrap.
The Cent is made for slow and steady advances. Although too slow for my taste in later eras, it can hold its own in a defensive position.

A durable mech, mainly because the [CENSORED] XL engine isnt there.
It does suffer from a lack of agility in that reguard. I suppose it would come down to ones personal preference, but Ill save that for another day.
The weapons load is classic CN9. AC, two lasers and an LRM rack. Why mess with what works?

Comment:
Durable refit. 3050 design had the speed but this variant has standard engine that allows it to withstand much more punishment and fight longer. Weapons don't generate much heat, so single heat sinks aren't problematic. Speed is just average, enough for defensive situations and slow advances and ammo bay is big enough too.

For a Centurion its miles ahead of its competition. However, Centurions for the most part have never turned my crank.
They suffer from several issues. One is only average speed for a "Battle" mech. Then the lack of jets, plus the capability to lose your only real weapon to having an arm removed.
Plus I like 5 or 7 points of armour on my rear torso. 4 Makes Rifle infantry platoon a serious threat if they pop up behind you.
I'm not sure what it is about centurions but they always seem to be really weak for their tonnage. Although they are cool running which is a bonus some days and for some peoples.

A nice upgrade for a 3025 Centurion. I like this a lot better than the stupid XL engined, 6/9 Centurions of 3050 and later. I'd take this over the claptrap CN9-D5 without hesitation. This has a very nice ammo supply; double CASE would be preferable, but I agree that the tonnage just isn't there. The armor is a little short, but still solid enough for a 3025 upgrade. Artemis is a much needed addition to the Centurion, since it depends quite heavily on the LRMs. I really like the standard engine and 4/6 speed; a Centurion has no reason to move faster than that.
