Overview:
Imported from XTRO: Project Zhukov by Steve Cross.
It was recognised that the Ku, Oro and Ishtar were all getting long in the
tooth for their role as a heavy battle tank. The Ku’s punch was impressive, but it
presented a huge profile at long range and was slow, trading speed for
firepower. The Oro’s firepower was unfocused and the tank itself was horribly
protected whilst the Ishtar was slow, unstable but heavily armed, but it could
barely keep up with the slowest assault Mechs and was quickly left behind in
the mobile battles the Clans used.
It was obvious that a newer, faster vehicle was needed to keep up with the
traditional cavalry speeds of the Clans and that the Hells Horses were focusing
on with their combined arms Nova’s.
Under Project Zhukov now Khan Yana Fletcher ordered the development of
a general-purpose tank that was to include modular technology in its
construction. The Horses friendship with Clan Coyote was proving beneficial
and both Clans were working on new weapon systems brought forwards by
their Scientists. One of these systems would be called the Armoured Motive
System that had been created almost by accident on the Ganesha when the
Scientists were tying themselves in knots trying to make a 100-ton vehicle
amphibious and not get stuck in the mud all the time.
The Armoured Motive System was layers of differing materials encased in a
harjel and thermal gel as well as layers of ablative plating. This would stop most
shrapnel and even directed blasts from causing major damage to the tracks or
wheels of any vehicle fitted, but the system was heavy and maintenance
intensive. But, Khan Yana Fletcher insisted that the new vehicle be fitted with
it.
Capabilities:
The new tank was designed to absorb punishment whilst having enough
firepower to make its enemies take notice of it and be able to keep up with
friendly Mechs and this was a rather tall order. Massing 65 tons and
using the ancient Manticore tank as inspiration the design that would
emerge ticked every one of Khan Fletcher’s boxes in the requirements he
had requested.
Armed with a gauss rifle and dual medium pulse lasers the ‘Prime’
version packed enough firepower to cause significant damage at all
ranges whilst over nine tons of ferro-fibrous armour gave it superior
protection to all current serving Clan tanks save the huge Mars. A pair of
light machine guns were also installed but most infantry could never
catch the tank as it was still capable of an impressive 86kph.
The Khan took the prototype out for a test himself and after
suggesting some changes to the interior it was approved for production.
Deployment:
Harkening back to more traditional tanks like the Merkava and Von
Luckner heavy tanks the newly designed Yama (named after a Hindu
death God) had a crew of five which would become the norm for larger
vehicles produced by the Zhukov Project. Four of the crew, the
Commander, Gunner, Loader and Weapons System Operator (WSO)
were located in the turret whilst the driver was in the bow of the tank. The
Commander and Gunner were the most senior crew in the tank whilst the
WSO who supported the Loader in maintaining and running the tanks
weapons and operated the defensive weapons was the most junior.
With their larger than average Sibko’s the Horses could use their
Warriors like this and extensive training went into making the team work
and with the Horses focus on ‘the man, not the machine’ and that the
Horses place greater emphasis on teamwork and working towards the
greater goal was this able to work in the typically Darwinist Clans.
Built in large numbers the Yama quickly became the standard heavy
vehicle fielded in the Horse Touman and whilst the heavier Minerva, Alke
and Kratos also saw service alongside dwindling numbers of older
vehicles, the Yama was far more common and more popular because of
its higher speed than the other designs.
The Yama also had another thing that made it attractive to the Cluster
and Galaxy Commanders assigned them. The tank was modular. To a
degree. Unlike OmniMechs the Yama did have some fixed systems like
its bow machine guns and the armoured motive system was integral to its
design as well. Instead the turret assembly was modular and the whole
turret including the turret basket could be lifted from the tank and a new
one put in its place. Whilst this could only be done in a DropShip or in a
mobile field base and thus was less flexible than a standard OmniPod
system, it still made the tank highly flexible and six variants were
designed and saw service prior to Operation REVIVAL.
Despite being offered to the Coyotes for their assistance the Coyotes
refused the design owing to prejudices in the Clan’s Warriors against the
Freeborn who filled out the common role of vehicle crews. They didn’t
see the need in giving them such advanced and powerful designs and as
only Freeborns were ‘honoured’ with serving as crews in the Coyote
Tourman they didn’t see the need for the Yama.
Other Clans were also of the same mindset although some Yama’s
saw service as Isorla when they were taken as salvage and the Wolves
deployed several Stars of them in second line units to replace their oldest
vehicles that were beyond economical repair.
This bias against vehicles would come to bite the Invading Clans in the
rear when faced with large numbers of tanks as well as Spheroid forces
who used combined arms tactics, which only the Horses truly practiced despite having been
derided for it in the build up to REVIVAL. In battle the Inner
Sphere found the Yama’s combination of speed, firepower and survivability a
very unpleasant surprise and it is believed that the Yama influenced the later
Lyran Manteuffel Attack Tank which closely mirrored the Clan tank’s speed,
firepower and protection.
