General Details
Name:  Backhoe
Type (Category):  Equipment (Melee)
Reference:  TechManual (p. 241)

Description:
The backhoe is a common commercial and industrial tool, designed primarily for excavating soil. It is a frequent sight on Support Vehicles and IndustrialMechs, but almost never appears on BattleMechs or battlefield units. Typically forged from thick industrial steel, the bucket of a backhoe—while large and ungainly—can pack quite a wallop as an improvised physical combat weapon for an IndustrialMech, but it is functionally useless in combat otherwise.

The Clans’ relative disdain of IndustrialMechs means that Clanmade backhoes only ever turn up on their Support Vehicles.

Game Rules:
Note that Hover and WiGE units may not use a Backhoe unless they have first landed (stopped in the previous turn and spent 0 MP in that turn) and are adjacent to the target. Naval units equipped with Backhoes may only use them while stationary (spending 0 MP in that turn) and directly adjacent to a target.

Special Unit Abilities
The special unit abilities described here are intended for use with the Alpha Strike rule system:
 Engineering (ENG)
A unit with this special ability can clear woods just like a unit with the Saw special ability. In addition, a unit with this ability can clear a path through rubble. It takes 1 turn for a group of 4 or more units with the Engineering special to clear a 2” long path of rubble, 2 turns for 3 units, 3 turns for 2 units and 4 turns for 1 unit.

An area cleared by engineering units does not actually change its terrain type; the clearing action simply creates a narrow, clear path through it that units may use to pass through the terrain as if it is clear.

 Melee (MEL)
This special ability indicates that the ’Mech is equipped with a physical attack weapon, and adds 1 additional point of physical attack damage on a successful Melee-type physical attack.
