Kracken's right the other tech is good but DHS are the best thing to happen to 3025 mechs.

No. The two single worst peices of tech ever intoduced were the XL engine and the DHS.
XL= Mechs went from bing used in battle after battle to being one shot deals. They just don't have the survivability. And because it allows so many more weapons it just destroys the whole concept of having to balance speed and firepower in a mech.
DHS= Heat is no longer a problem and one of the fundamental skills for players (heat management) is lost. There was a time when players rode the red all the times. Going 20 on the heat scale was not a rarity. The last tournament I was at, this kid was utterly amazed and in shock that I shrugged of a heat scale that was all the way up to 10 after dissipating heat.

I can live with DHS, you can still over heat a mech even with them on there, trust me I have managed to do it more then once...
But what I don't like as far as the rules go is how XL Engines are treated, sure they are a great thing to have, UNTIL you take the mech into battle. For the Inner Sphere you get an internal hit to the side torso, you are in deep crap...I have seen folks actually retreat a mech off board, from ONE side hit that breached the armor and the roll for crits failed.
The rules for the XLs and what happens when you lose the torse SHOULD HAVE BEEN, for the Inner Sphere you get TWO Engine hits, NOT three and a dead mech. And for the Clans they should have gotten ONE engine hit once the torse was gone.
As it is written I agree that XL engines make the mechs a one shot wonder.

Yeah, it would have been better if either the IS XL had fewer crits or if the Clan XK had the same number of crits.
I too have overheated a DHS equipped mech more than once, but it just seems like so many of the desgins HAVE to have DHS. It wouldn't be so bad if a lot of newer players could manage heat and it is a skill that a lot of people simply don't have.

I agree, but as I found out a year ago, taking Ferro and DHS and putting them on mechs like the Warhammer and Marauder, turn excellent mechs into awesome mechs, AND they still run hot.
Personally I like building in flaws to my mechs, so as to prevent the munchkins from abusing them. I still love it when I go to a convention and folks sign up for my game and find out that we are not using Clan tech, and oh the heat rules do apply, and it is amazing how fast they are the first ones to get killed. "What your heat is at 21, well roll to see shutdown, nope okay NOW roll to see if you set your ammo...BOOM...off, wow!"
The XL engine is where the change in the rules is really needed...but TPTB aren't going change them so we are stuck with the lopsided rule.

The flaw inhearnant in nearly every FASA mech is one of the things I love about them. Any fool can design a Uber-Death-Mech. But it is just more fun to have to take a mediocre mech and try to use it.
Not enough ammo? Too bad.
XL engine and not enough Armor? Tough luck.
Over heats? Learn heat management.
Not enough speed/maneuverability? Learn to pilot.

All good points and ones that I think have made the game something folks CAN get into and enjoy because each mech is different and has something going for it over the others out there, but not enough that it can win everytime.
I would rather face the UBER mechs in overheating slow mech because that way I know I have to actually USE the mech and it's weapons to win and not just move and shot. If I want that kind of game, I can go blasting away at the ground hogs and moles with my AR-50 50cal rifle. All I need to is sit and wait and then KA-BOOM dead rodent.

Nobody wants to play to lose of course, but there si just something about haveing to overcome those problems that is more satisfying I guess.

True, but can you care to explain the folks what must always use Targ/Pulse DHS to the max monsters to win?

Those kind of players are not much of an issue to me as I tend to defeat them with tactics. The munchkins I run into don't want to play with me anymore because I make their "babies" (what many like to call their mechs) look like crap.
And I'm not even the best player I know

Even when you do beat them, they DON'T learn anything and next time you see them they have another UBER GUNSHIP to use.

Not the smart ones. Now I hardly ever have to play against the munchkins as many of the younger people I've tought to play can easily beat them.
