Variants:
The HCT-3R Hatchetman was developed in an effort to make a more general purpose model of the
HCT-3F Hatchetman. The immense size of the type 10 autocannon and its ammunition consumes
almost one-third the total mass of that BattleMech, and removing it opened up several
possible routes for improving the design. Firstly, a large laser was fitted into the space
opened by removing the autocannon. Having the same range and hitting 80% as hard as the
original autocannon means that very little was lost by this change, except that each shot is
more than twice as hot, which is partially alleviated by the addition of an additional heat
sinks. This would not remove all the extra heat if all the lasers were used at once for
extended periods, so a large short-range missile rack was added in the other torso. Two tons
of ammunition allow the use of alternate ammunition if the battlefield requires it. The last
three tons freed by the switch have been devoted to extra armor, virtually maximizing the
amount allowed on a 45 ton frame. Engineers also wanted to increase the machine’s ground
speed and jump ability, but the former would require use of technology lost long ago, and
only recently recovered and not yet out of prototype testing. And without an increase in
fusion core power, jump capacity cannot be increased.
