Overview:
[NOTE: This unit was NOT made with battletech canon in mind. It was created for a group
based AU game that separates around the time of the succession wars.]
Almost entirely produced by Volksmetal who spearheaded the project, the SGT-12A
'Strahlgeschützträger II' (Beam Weapon Carrier II) was made with the intent to produce a
reliable combat platform to use in armored spearheads. Though ostensibly meant to be a
continuation of the Strahlgeschützträger line, ulterior motives plagued the project as a
concerted effort was made by Volksmetal to exclude Seader Co. as much as possible, going so
far as to commission a civilian automobile company for the creation of the vehicle's engine
in exchange for production rights.
The result was, surprisingly enough, a fairly effective medium tank that made up for its
mediocre speed with both good armor and impressive firepower. With a quad-stack array of
medium lasers mounted on the turret and eight tons of armor to keep it safe, lesser mobility
was made up for in its ability to go through terrain that its wheeled predecessor could not.
All the while being only slightly more complicated to produce in the grand scheme of things.
In combat, the SGT-12A has proven fairly effective but far from perfect. Though considered a
powerhouse for its weight at close range, the tank begins to struggle at medium range and
outright lacks any long range effectiveness. A fact that has often led to it being
considered a death trap in open fields; the kind of environment where a tank is supposed to
shine. Nevertheless, the affordable cost and undeniable close range power has solidified the
Strahlgeschützträger II's place in the VNSR's military.
Capabilities:
The SGT-12A 'Strahlgeschützträger II' is a well armed and armored frontline unit. Without
being too slow, it is able to bring a dangerous amount of firepower to the field and take a
fair bit of damage before being taken out. Best deployed in cover-rich environments, it can
prove extremely dangerous when guarding against fast moving flankers or overconfident
heavies who allow themselves to get outnumbered.
Deployment:
The SGT-12A 'Strahlgeschützträger II' is a dedicated close range juggernaut and will not
perform well or at all if used for anything else. Perfect at guarding flanks or slowly
pushing the line while friendly units fill other roles, the cheap C-Bill and BV price allow
a fairly impressive amount of the SGT-12A to be fielded without being too heavy of an
investment.
Variants:
The SGT-12 'Strahlgeschützträger II' has three variants.
The first is the SGT-12A, which was described above.
The second is the SGT-12B, which attempts to make up for the original model's lack of range
by replacing two mediums lasers and their heat sinks with an LRM10 and 3 tons of ammo. The
result was mediocre and inconsistent damage at all ranges and a much greater reliance on
logistics. This has led to this model being underproduced and rarely deployed in favor of
more specialized units.
The third is the SGT-12L, which was made with the intent to complement the original rather
than replace or improve upon it. By removing all of the medium lasers, two heat sinks, half
a ton of machine gun ammo and one ton of ammo, the SGT-12L mounts a single PPC on the
turret. This extreme change in loadout is reflected in its use as these models are meant to
be deployed alongside the original SFT-12A and work in synergy.
Notable MechWarriors:
None. There is no crew in the galaxy that could retain any form of fame with a vehicle like
this.
