Overview:
Developed as part of the great 3065 A.E.G.I.S. (Air Enforcement & Ground Insurance Systems)
initiative meant to bring Task Force Talon's arsenal up to date with modern threats, the
EQL-6B "Equalizer" faced a trial by fire as its deployment coincided with the start of the
great Jihad. Fielded initially in small numbers, it quickly gained a reputation as a
terrifyingly effective machine thanks to its unique inclusion of newly acquired Clan
technologies in the form of two ATM6 launchers.
With a twin LB-X AC/2 setup as secondary weapons and an XL fusion engine to allow for good
speed despite its weight, the Equalizer lived up to its name in more ways that one; able to
engage targets at all ranges to equally devastating effect on both the air and ground with
enough armor to survive more than one brawl. A fact that soon made it a priority target to
all who faced it, thus causing its already limited numbers to shrink even further and make
its deployment even more of a risk.
Nevertheless, the success it has seen on the field served as more than enough incentive to
slowly expand the production of the model. By the time of the Jihad's end, the EQL-6B
"Equalizer" had become a true mainstay of Task Force Talon's forces, almost always piloted
by veteran crews who could make the most of its deadly arsenal without the risk of rookie
mistakes that could result in its loss or capture.
Capabilities:
The EQL-6B "Equalizer" can and will hold the line against most enemies. Able to punch well
above its weight thanks to the dual ATM6 setup, its weapons allow it to almost always secure
the first strike at a good distance and soften up any target before switching to HE for
close range. Similarly, its advanced targeting computer and twin LB-X AC/2 setup can prove
exceedingly dangerous against enemy VTOL units even at long ranges.
Thanks to the range advantage, the EQL-6B "Equalizer" becomes exponentially more dangerous
when given a better skilled crew, more so than most vehicles. With all weapons except the
small pulse laser, being able to reach incredibly far, a veteran crew can maximize the
'first strike' advantage and severely weaken opponents before they can enter effective
range, thus minimizing damage taken and allowing the Equalizer to engage the next target in
good condition.
Deployment:
The EQL-6B "Equalizer" is capable of both sniping and brawling to an equally competent
degree. Though not the most heavily armored, it has enough protection to safely engage
opponents up close. Its main downsides are its speed and the deceptively simple fact that
all of its main weapons are mounted on the turret. This can lead to situations where a lucky
strike can disable the turret and force the Equalizer to use most of its movement points to
change facings, making it practically immobile.
Furthermore, the 70 ton weight means that it cannot be easily transported by a 60 ton (max
tonnage) superheavy support VTOL like many other units, further limiting its potential
mobility. As such, it is best to use the The EQL-6B "Equalizer" as a centerpiece to an
escorting force of weaker fodder units. Doing so will allow for said fodder to take up
initiative turns and cover its flanks while it performs its duties. Alternatively, one could
simply deploy a pair of Equalizers to cover each other, though that is not necessarily the
best solution.
Variants:
The The EQL-6 "Equalizer" has two variants.
The first is the The EQL-6LB which was described above.
The second is the The EQL-6RC which replaces the twin LB-X AC/2 setup with a rotary AC5 and
4 tons of ammo and additional ATM6 ammo, trading range and cluster munitions for raw damage
potential. Due to the unwieldy and complex nature of the rotary AC5, this variant is
produced only in small numbers and given only to proven veterans, relying on their skill and
experience to make up for the drastic change in approach and versatility.
The third was the EQL-6C3M, created in 3070, it replaces half a ton of armor, the arguably
unnecessary targeting computer and both tons of standard AC/2 ammo with a C3 Master computer
and a guardian ECM. While not as rare as the EQL-6RC, this model is still not too common as
is only deployed as part of fully C3-equipped formations, usually in the form of a
sub-commander unit connecting a company master unit to a group of three slave units.
