That's what wee had to do to get Double HeatSinks. We always said that the heatsinks in the Engine were an integral part of the engine. Thus we would have to replace the Engine to upgrade to Double Heatsinks....

| I can see that but it shouldn't be the case. Heat Sinks are accessible in the engine so that if they had a failure they'd be replacable. Remember, Field Upgrade kits didn't always have an engine in the package with using double heat sinks and weapons. I can see making it a little tougher to make the change out but not making someone replace the engine.

think of the engine as a big box with lots or slots or plugs.
the heat sinks would then plug into there.
as long as you rip out all the existing ones.
you can start plugging in Clan doubles right away.
mixing tech isn't level 3.
in BMR, it says that you can have units with mixed tech. but because stock have only 1 tech base, mixing isn't used in tourneys.
warner probably said it better :b

Please indicate where in the BMR is says mixed tech is allowed.
Under the construction rules (which are level 2) it strictly forbids IS units from having Clan equipment and vice-versa.

What I think he is trying to point out is that a unit cannot be built with mixed tech, but that if you need to do repairs you can use Clan lasers if that is all you have and the unit is considered Lev 2 still.
I think I remember reading something like that in the Rules of Warfare or something. As I felt no reason to buy the BMR i have no idea whats in it, but I see no reason why they should change it. All it affects are campaigns, not tournaments (which are one shot battles). This rule means that a GM running a Lev 2 campaign makes his players lives a little easier on the field.

Yep, you could "customize" your mech per the rules, but it is no longer level 2.

Mixing the two techs was legal up until the BMRs (both versions) came out. Now it's a Level 3 option. And as Randal said the mixed tech is allowed FOR NON-TOURNAMENT PLAY. So if you want to use it in your game have fun, if you want to use it at an offical WK/FP run game, well it's not going to happen.
So that leaves groups like the Dragoons and the Kell Hounds and some of the other merc units in the Level 3 catogory or GOD level.

Under the construction rules, mixed tech is forbidden.
Under the "special case rules" it shows how it could be done.
Mixed tech is level 3.

| I think you maybe over simplifying everything here and confusing the universe with the board game. They are two complete entities and should be kept that way. Because they Kell Hounds and Dragoons that you use for the table top game are not the same one's as shown in the universe itself. Unless of course the scenario states it otherwise. I don't recall seeing that the Dragoons or Kell Hounds are using mixed tech. Using Clan Tech yes. But having a Warhammer with Clan weapons and heat sinks no.
If one remembers to do that then its far easier to distinguish the rules in the setting they are made for.
Now if'n you want to state what is a god unit, that would be any unit that has never been defeated and always pulls out a victory even if they have a lance of 'Mechs with small lasers and 10 men armed with pig stickers. That would be...the Jade Falcons and Gray Death Legion...wait.. the Legion lost and are dead so they aren't on that list anymore!

Warner, don't confuse the Issue with facts..... This is BattleTech we're talking about...
I'll have to go back and read the BMR because I don't remember it said that Mixed Tech is level 3.

The C mechs from the record sheet books...the Thunderbolt-C is one that Mavie used to kill Alpin in his Thor...and since when did the fiction and the game stop being one in the same?

For Level 2 play yes, for anything else no it's not forbidden.

No kidding, I think I said that. So mixing the two is not breaking the rules, it simple moves the rules to Level 3 play.

Yep you said it, but if you read my post you could easily think I was saying it is not legal at all, so I was clarifying what I said.
