Overview:
[NOTE: This unit was NOT made with battletech canon in mind. It was created for a group
based AU game that separates around the time of the succession wars.]
One of the first vehicles produced by the VNSR, the SGT-7A 'Strahlgeschützträger I' (Beam
weapon carrier) has dutifully served in the frontlines of every conflict since its creation.
Effectively an armored car with a large laser, the almost primitive design was both an
intentional choice and unavoidable necessity. Without any extensive experience in the field,
the R&D team responsible for the project of a home-made light tank design agreed that their
end-product must be easily produced with limited resources and offer minimal logistic strain
on any world that fields it.
Easy to operate due to its wheeled nature, the resultant three-man combat vehicle repeatedly
proved to be invaluable thanks to this design philosophy. Paired with a lack of need for
complicated maintenance, the vast quantity in which the Strahlgeschützträger I's many
variants have been produced rivals infantry support weapons and despite the severe age of
its platform, there are no signs of this production stopping, even if a lot of the bigger
factories have long been switched to other projects.
Capabilities:
The SGT-7A 'Strahlgeschützträger I' has decent mobility but light armor. Its main strength
comes from the serious punch of its large laser and the incredible affordability that allows
one to field a full lance of these units at a dirt cheap cost, both in C-Bills and BV. With
the machine gun as a bonus, it is easy to overwhelm an unprepared enemy through sheer volume
of units.
Deployment:
The SGT-7A 'Strahlgeschützträger I' is by no means a "Good" tank. It is an "Efficient"
tank, however. 'Numbers' is the name of the game and thanks to its pathetic cost, the SGT-7A
can easily be treated as if a full lance is just a single unit. That, however, goes both
ways as even a full lance of these units can crumble under the firepower of a single good
heavy 'mech.
Variants:
The SGT-7 'Strahlgeschützträger I' has four variants.
The first is the SGT-7A, which was described above.
The second is the SGT-7D, which was designed as more offensively oriented variant. It
replaces the single large laser with an array of three medium lasers and an extra ton of
armor. Despite coming later, this variant ended up becoming more popular than the original
and is the most commonly deployed version of this vehicle.
The third is the SGT-7G, which was designed as an Anti-Air variant. It replaces both the
large laser and the machine gun with a pair of turret mounted AC/2s and 1 ton of ammo. This
variant is almost as common as the SGT-7A due to the easy production and supply of AC/2s.
The fourth is the SGT-7M, which was designed as a fire support platform. IIt replaces both
the large laser and the machine gun with a turret mounted LRM/20 and four tons of ammo. This
variant is not as common as the SGT-7A and SGT-7G but is still far from a rare sight.
Notably, the irony of mounting guns and missiles to a vehicle literally called the 'beam
weapon carrier' was not something that went unnoticed, with many crews humorously referring
to the autocannon and missile ammo as 'solidified beam munitions' and 'locally sourced beam
alternatives' among other things.
Notable MechWarriors:
None. There is no crew in the galaxy that could retain any form of fame with a vehicle like
this.
