Technology: Inner Sphere
Technology Rating: E
Tonnage: 50
Role: Sniper
Configuration: Combat Vehicle
Era/Year: Star League / 2682
Rules (Current): Standard
Rules (Era): Standard
Rules (Year): Standard
Total Cost: 1,762,500 C-Bills
Battle Value: 864
Movement Type: Hover
Power Plant: GM 15 XL
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph
Armor: StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
1 SLDF Model 22-99-b Gauss Rifle
1 Holly Mark II Streak SRM 2
1 Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser
Manufacturer: Ford Military Limited, General Motors, Star League Defense Industries
Primary Factory: Terra (FML), Terra (GM), El Dorado (GM), Mars (SLDI)
Communications: Ford Watchdog
Targeting & Tracking: GME HiTrak-2
================================================================================================
Overview:
Meant to be complementary to the much more massive (and vulnerable) Hardshot Supertank, the
Longshot Hovertank was developed for the SLDF Royals in 2682 by the same joint GM/Ford
partnership that created the original Hardshot. The Longshot ended up being preferred over
the Hardshot because of the latter's major flaw of its massive ammunition stores; while
originally intended to allow it to go multiple operations without restock, the ammo often
wound up being replaced wholesale after missions, resulting in waste - to say nothing of how
such a large store of ammunition was an Achilles' heel. It also implemented hover technology
to give it additional maneuverability on top of that affored by the halving of weight.
However, the design's extinction during the ensuing Succession Wars (a combination of meant
many had to fall back on the bulkier and more dangerous to operate Hardshot.
With the recovery of the Helm Memory Core, the Federated Suns would be the ones to revive
the design in 3041 using GM's factories on El Dorado, resulting in the Longshot becoming a
symbol of the Davions. Due to being part of the Federated Commonwealth, this meant it could
be paired up with Hardshots again thanks to the Lyrans who had kept the older tank design
during the Succession Wars.
Capabilities:
The 50-ton Longshot, as the name suggests, is a sniper first and foremost. All of its
weapons are located on the turret: its primary is a SLDF Model 22-99-b Gauss Rifle
(typically substituted with a Poland Main Model A for Federated Suns-built units), which is
supported by a Holy Mark II Streak SRM 2 and a Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser. The Gauss
Rifle and SRM both have a single ton of ammo.
As for the platform itself, it is powered by a GM 15 XL engine, protected by 6 tons of
StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous armor, and cooled by 10 standard heat sinks. Its electronics are the
same as the Hardshot: A Forge Watchdog comms system and a GME HiTrak-2 TTS. Four Ford
Strongman units provide the repulsion for the hovertank.

Why such a low-powered engine? As a hovercraft, the engine mass is automatically upped to 20% of the overall vehicle mass (10 tons for a 50 ton design) if it is less than that to begin with. So, you could get like 8/12 speed brackets for no extra tonnage. More if you use an XL.

Wasn't aware of that, first time making a hovervehicle.

I had assumed it was to control the price. A 15 rated engine costs almost nothing.

And a standard fusion core large enough to make the design go 8/12 raises the price tag by less than three-quarts of a million c-bills.
More expensive yes, but more effective.
Still, if cheap price is your objective, just go with a standard fusion core for the 5/8 movement. Same mass (due to build rules), and even cheaper and easier to maintain.
All depends on what is desired from a design. Not all are made to “game the system”.

And Kirbanzo has a habit of making designs with such glaring flaws that I assume they're intentional for flavor. An extra cheap engine, thats still XL fits that MO.
As is he did update the design so in this case it wasn't as intentional as I thought.

I generally like adding design flaws to add a bit of personality, so you're on the money with that one. It wasn't intentional this time, though.
