Overview:
The Tatra factory, nested on the very heart of humanity on Terra, designed it's Kolos III
carriage based recovery vehicle around the freshly unveiled Battlemech technology back in
2445, but it never became what it was meant to be. The Hegemony and later the Star League
never actually accepted the Kolos III in service in spite of it being quite capable. The
original Tatra factory could have never met Hegemony production number demands and
outsourcing legal disputes got so bogged down, that the prototype didn't even enter the
contest when the newly formed Star League sought an universal recovery vehicle decades
later. Later the requirement to outfit the new generations with fusion engines were right
out of question for the moderately sized vehicle manufacturer, so Tatra focused on newly
opened periphery markets after as the post-reunification war restrictions were lifted. Tatra
outsourced the upgraded non-primitive models to several periphery manufacturers that made
the vehicle quite popular on the outskirts of civilisation where it's rugged nature was a
considerable asset.
Capabilities:
The Tatra Kolos IV Recovery Vehicle is one of the most basic 'Mech recovery vehicles you can
find on the market. It's four lift hoists and powerful, if basic, Internal combustion engine
allow for the full bulk of a Mackie to be loaded onto the sixteen wheel frame and moved
about at respectable speeds. Unlike most of the vehices of similar types the Kolos IV is
moderately armoured and while quite compact it has an enclosed compartment for a squad of
mechanics inside. A sturdy machine gun nest on the right side of the driver compartment can
provide some resistnce to battlefield scavengers who would interfere with vehicle
operations.
Deployment:
Due to it's curious production history the Kolos IV can be found mostly on Terra itself and
sometimes on it's closest neighbours and then in the periphery. First producer under license
was non other than Rim World's Krauss-Liemann Inc. that needed a specialised hauler for it's
projects and preferred a smaller partner that it could easily exploit if needed, but the
partnership proved surprisingly trouble-free as Tatra was quite eager to get a foothold on
different markets and Krauss-Liemann who was secretely producing the Kolos III unlicensed
for the republic since 2470's sought a legal way to offer it's products on the league
market. The initial production supposedly had some quality issues, but due to limited
production these problems mainly affected the Krauss-Liemann itself and the actual marketed
vehicles were already remarkably trouble-free. Majesty Metals came next shortly followed by
league investment fuelled for Alliance Defenders where Tatra hoped to get on Federated Suns
markets. A hope that never came to be. Instead the Concordat approached Tatra with some
backroom deals brokered in magistracy entertainment establishments and started to produce
the Kolos III as a civilian heavy hauler and shorlty after the IV upgrde packets.
Variants:
Tatra Kolos III Recovery Vehicle uses less advanced armor, but otherwise it's essentially
the same vehicle with many parts being interchangeable without modification. A testament to
the original construction sturdiness and simplicity.
