This is not a concept. Wink

This is a heavily modified -3M Griffin that my custom merc unit, the Inner Sphere Honor Guard (ISHG), uses. It is the final stage of a three-stage evolution of this design throughout the life of the ISHG. The year this stage was made was circa 3081-82, just at the end of the WoB Jihad. The reason for the late production date is due to the perfected experimental components it mounts from various factions in the Inner Sphere. These components were either captured and reverse-engineered (WoB Void-Sig), or granted access due to friendships with various factions with the technology (Kell Hound AES, DC Angel ECM, FS Composite Internals).

FYI, the reason why the ISHG fields such an expensive mech (along with its other mechs) is due to it being funded by a FedCom political official that helped create the unit in the first place circa 3051. Originally, the purpose of the unit was to be a faction-less force that could be trained and funded to fight the Clan invasion. Since then, the purpose of the ISHG has been muddied, but it generally strives to be a peacekeeping force whenever it can't be used to fight the Clans.

Like most of the mechs of the ISHG, the concept behind this design is to be a sniper. So I removed its fire support abilities to focus on its sniper role. As with a lot of my upgrades, I made sure it had a good speed and jump jets for its weight (6/9/6), and a lot of armor (because that's just what I like to have 8) ). To save weight, I had an XL engine, FF armor, and Composite internals installed. This makes it a relatively fragile design, but the purpose of the design allows some sacrifices in durability.

Keeping the ERPPC of the -3M, I gave it 3 Med Lasers to provide decent close range backup if confronted. I also added a TAG laser to assist the Arrow IV mechs the ISHG fields, should the need arise. Finally, I added the crucial Void Sig, Angel ECM, and AES systems to assist the mech in its role.

I know I'm taking a lot of liberties here, but just focusing on the design, what do you guys think? I got the idea when I ran across the AES systems and how it doesn't conflict with the Void Sig, and put two and two together. 8)

P.S. for those curious about the fluff of my ISHG, the wiki page I made for it is here: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Inner_Sphere_Honor_Guard

What the hell is the AES? Scratch

Aside from that I wouldn't try to get in the med. laser range too much. Composite structure and XL engine could be trouble...

AES is short for Actuator Enhancement System and it's listed in Tac Ops as experimental equipment. It functions like a targeting computer, save its benefits are only for the weapons in the arm containing the AES. Essentially, it makes aiming and other movement easier. Wink

Would ER med lasers be a better substitute, or should I put those 3t/3crits to something else? Confused

As for the composites and XL engine, yeah it's a risk, but I guess it's one I'm willing to take. Maybe I could bring the engine back to a 5/8 and make it a light engine, and see where I go from there. Rolling Eyes

Since you are going out of your way to give your guys the best, as if a merc unit can truely afford all of this, then why not go with smaller cockpits and XXL engines etc...after all you are spending the money on the best why not go for all of it... Rolling Eyes

Would it be better if they were a special forces regiment of the Fed Suns? Just cut to the chase and eliminate the whole "they are mercs" bit? Rolling Eyes

As for small cockpits, and XXL engines, small cockpits hurt piloting rolls (my pilots aren't the WoB you know), and XXL engines are too fragile to be sensible. IS XL engines are enough of a risk.

Now granted you won't be seeing me field any mechs like these against other players... I'd probably field the second generation evolutions under advanced rules. Either way, these X mechs of mine simply take my previous designs to their logical advanced conclusion without going too far overboard. Wink

Hey here is an idea, stop with the damn emoticons that you seem to be tossing in every time we post something that you are not thrilled to read. Rolling yours eyes over things isn't going to keep folks posting much more then generic comments.

You want them to be mercs, that is fine, it is what you are giving them that is part that I don't see as plausible. As a spec ops group, really don't see a mech unit doing spec ops either but that is my take on the world of spec ops, is fine, but try to keep a few checks and balances in there...at the rate you are going they will soon be out doing even the best of the WoB and their cyborg warriors.

Well, Karagin, I think you'll be happy to know that I've found a group to play and share ideas with. So, I think I will retire from the forums for a while as I want to put my time and energy into that now. Smile

Au' revoire, my friend. 8)

Well, you should definitely try to run a few scenarios or a compaign with Succession wars tech (level 1 / tech around 3025). Appropriate TROs would be 3025, 3026 and 3039. You might find out more about the limitations of 'Mech design and somewhat get a glimpse on why most of us are tad annoyed when we see another ultra high tech merc unit.

Most of the world in which we grew up had mercs who had to save every coin to keep their 'Mechs running (Dragoons being a mysterious anomaly). And House units had troubles with replacing their losses even after relatively minor border skirmishes. Units that fought in the night offensive could stop in the morning and even exchange spare parts and food. Trained techs were a prize worthy of a battle. Dark Age and Jihad are often considered an Abomination just because they seriously alter the feeling of the old Battletech.

Well, thank you. I think we should be nice to newbs. We've been just like that, no matter how long ago it might have been.

Let's leave the Jihad debates where they belong. Someplace else that is.

CYBRN4CR, I like this design. I think it would make a good diversionary 'Mech. I mean it could attack at fairly decent range with its PPC to get maybe one or two head shots and fend off fast closing units with its MLs. I recommend dropping TAG in favor of a PPC Capacitor for another configuration but that's just my 2 cents.

Why thank you for the thoughts. Smile

Yes, in retrospect a capacitor would be a good choice to have. Personally, instead of the TAG, I'd switch out one Med Laser for it, and change the other two lasers to ER versions to be able to shoot at targets while still remaining hidden.

However, I have since moved on to a different design for my unit. One based off the -6S. I might post it, I might not. I'll have to see how I feel about it later.
