My Uncle tells the story of living in Arkansas in the mid-30s. A couple of rattlesnakes got into the house, so he and Granddad went after them with shotguns loaded with buckshot. The buckshot would sink into the wood, but bounce off the metal. So when they got into the kitchen to kill the snakes, they wouldn't damage Grandmother's stove.
I recall that shortly after this, my uncle started carrying the shotgun everywhere, stopped wearing shoes, and this drove Grandmother to tell Granddad "My son is not going to grow up to be an Arkansas hick. I'm going to Witchita, and Bob and John are coming with me. You're welcome to come if you want."
It was the depression era, so it was hard to move around (much less sell the farm), but they managed.
I imagine today this would never happen. Ah, the days gone by.
And on the topic of the US 2nd Ammendment, there was a recent case on that. I didn't catch if it was USSC or District of Columbia District Court, but the DC gun control laws were struck down. Was in the paper on Tuesday or Wednesday. |
Update: the case was in the the DC Circuit Court of Appeals.

That varies from state to state and you are talking about handguns for the most part since most states don't track who buys rifles or shotguns. I have owned guns since I was 12, had two .22 rifles and a .22 handgun. Never had any issues.
I have lived in several different states and never once have I heard about you need to be 21 years of age or older to own a gun.
Currently I have a Glock 9mm (wife uses it), a M4 Colt 5.56mm, AR-50 bolt action/singal shot .50cal rifle as well as the three .22 cal weapons I have had since I was a kid.

well honestely when was the last time you needed an fully automatic assault rifle? Oh that is right never.
Though I dont own one I have several friends that do. Hell a friend of mine almost bought a barret little 50. at a gun show, the guy was selling it for 1500usd. He was sorly tempted but figured his girlfriend would have a fit. |
Funny the M16 family hasn't been full auto since the original M16 and the A1 versions. Funny again how folks don't even know that much, but yet still want to claim that they are fully auto.
Using the arguement you did against assault rifles, why would anyone need to really own a gun? Besides self protection, hunting or target shooting what good are they?

Karagin, here in Illinois you have to be 18 to buy rifles/shotguns and 21 to buy a handgun. You also have to have a Firearm Owners Identification Card, for which you have to fill out an application for that basically justs asks if you are felon, mentally insane, drug addict, etc. I don't mind any of that, but what I think sucks is you have to carry a gun only in the trunk (or equivelent) of your car and it has to be unloaded. Also there's no concealed carry.
By the way, how much did that .50 cal set you back? I heard those sell for up to $8,000.

Tom, you may want to move to another state that doesn't have draconian gun laws. Most states have it that you have to keep the ammo and the firearm apart while transporting it, normally this applies to rifles and shotguns.
I guess I have been lucky and lived in states that didn't belong to the anti-gun colation of political leadership. My CCL was transferable from MI to TX after I took two gun saftey classes. Two hours and that was it.
As for the AR-50 it ran me around $3800, got a Leoplod Mark IV 10xZoom scope free as well as some other things.

| Moving on... I don't know too much about shotguns Karagin, I plan to get one sooner or later here, but I currently don't own one because there's nothing really to hunt in Illinois and I think my XD-40 and Five-seveN handguns are currently adequate for self-defense. I'd like to get something other than Remington/Mossberg since that's what everyone seems to have. I like to be different when it comes to guns.

Try a Franchi. I hear they're good with the shotguns. They make the infamous SPAS-12 and -15 combat shotguns, and the (at least I hear) excellent AL-48.

The 8,000 dollar .50 cal is the barret semi-auto sniper rifle. Uses the same round as the .50 MG. There was a gun store around here that had one on display, big sucker but I hear the way it was designed, the recoil isn't that much more than a .308 or 30-06 rifle. But I wouldn't take that as gospel, haven't actually met anyone at the gun club yet that has one when I'm out there.
I got back into shooting a year ago after a very long time away from it. I wanted to start collecting military surplus rifles. I started out with a Mosin-Nagant bolt action made in 1943 and then got a Swiss K-31 that looks beat up but still shoots as well or better than a great many much fancier looking hunting rifles that cost far more money. That and all Swiss military surplus ammo is actually match grade ammo.
More recently I got an SKS rifle, the Yugoslav one that can be had in new/unissued condition. At first I wasn't sure I would like it much, but that thing grew on me pretty fast and now I want another one just for a spare. Some say the SKS isn't very accurate, but the one I have shoots just fine. I'd shoot even better with it, but so far I don't have a scope on anything, I'd rather get good shooting over iron sights.
I also got a Ruger 10-22, a .22 rifle that you can buy 30 and 50 round magazines for. You can shoot .22s all day at the range and not spend 20 bucks. I have a scope for it, but haven't yet mounted it, been doing well enough without it.
But my best shooting rifle is still my old Marlin Model 30A .22 lever action. It belonged to my father and dates back to at least the early 60s. I didn't haul it out of the closet and go shooting with until after I was 18. I've run the occasional patch down the barrel and lubricated it a little, but I've never actually taken it apart for cleaning. To the best of my knowledge it hasn't ever been taken apart unless my father did so before he died of cancer back in 1972. But it shoots just fine, never had a problem regardless of the ammo brand and it is very accurate.
I have some pistols as well, a single action western repro in .375 I've had since the mid 90s or so. A .22 buckmark, and as of last month, 3 9 millimeter handguns. An old Walther P1, the copy of the WWII German P-38. An old Taurus semi-auto pistol I've had for years for burglars and hadn't fired much at until recently. And I just bought a brand new Beretta Px4 Storm that comes with 17 round magazines as standard, though stuffing all 17 rounds into a brand new magazine is a real thumb buster.
I've planned for a while to get a CCL here in Texas and I've been working on learning to shoot with both eyes open and on fast target aquisition and such because I want to be a decently good shot and decently drilled on actually drawing and shooting before I take the CCL course and get my license.
I have a 12 guage pump too, bought it to try shooting sporting clays. Only got to do that a couple of times since I bought it, but it was fun. And the shells and clay targets aren't expensive.
At some point I'm going to get a good defensive 12 guage for the burglars. A pistol is good, but nothing can make em run like like racking the slide on a pump shotgun can. And from what I've read on forums and such, a good shotgun is a lot better for in home defense than a pistol.

Yeah I've seen them. The only problem is they're very expensive, just like Benelli's M1 and their one semi-auto (M3?). And I don't think the SPAS-12 is made any more so I wouldn't be suprised if the market price for one is at least $1500 nowadays. There's one version of the Benelli M1 that is has all grey polymer furniture and a pistol grip that's is selling for $1000 at the shooting range/gun store I usually go to. I wouldn't mind having that, since a Remington 870 marine magnum is around $600 and I wouldn't mind spending an extra couple hundred bucks and getting one less gun or something to have something unique.
In response to the previous gentleman who said that shotguns are better for home defense than pistols: My apartment is rather small and I don't know that I'd like coming around a corner with a gun of that length in my hands. I just think that a pistol is a little easier to handle. My prefered self-defense gun is my XD-40 in (huge suprise) .40 S&W. Although the Five-seveN looks better on paper and shoots better at the range, I haven't really heard anything about it and the bullet is rather new and unproven (although the Secret Service uses them supposedly), so I'll stick to my XD-40. And in response to your problems loading your high capacity Beretta magazines: My XD-40 came with a magazine loader that is a real thumbsaver. It's magazines hold 12 rounds and putting in any after 10 is a real chore. But the magazine loader makes it all extremely easy. And its just a piece of plastic so you should be able to find one real cheap.

I had the chance to fire the SPAS in Iraq. Nice weapon, but I wasn't use to a magazine feed shotgun...guess I need more hands on with the weapon...
