After walking in, Kraken makes a brief nod each at Lurch and Alexis before taking his usual seat.
"Ain't seen you in a while," one of the other patrons says, leaning over.
"Busy with work," Kraken replied without a second thought.
"Doing what?"
"Getting an entire housing unit's worth of pre-manufactured homes moved."
"What's so hard about that?"
"Truck driver's unit went on strike. So I had to improvise."
"How so?"
"Let's just say there's a reason why I like mechs with hand actuators."
"I don't follow."
"Went in with a few others and used our mechs to move the rest of the houses. Suffice to say no one dared challenge us for crossing the picket line."
"I see."

If the houses were moved with the people inside, than the moving would be fun  , but otherwise it would be just another day at work.

Well, of the mechs at my disposal (can't remember; is my real estate business supporting my stable or is my stable supporting my real estate business?) only four *don't* have hands.
One of said four is a Vulcan.
Even less reason for then to keep me from crossing the picket line.

I just realized that since I haven't actually listed my character's backstory some of you probably were scratching your heads as to this topic.
My character was a Solaris native who decided to join the military. He was a low-ranking officer and mech pilot, who went on Bulldog. After Bulldog, he got out of the military and went back to Solaris to take over the family stable.
In an effort to keep some money coming in between matches, my character began to invest. A large amount of money went into a Solaris real estate company which was ultimately embezzled to death by the VP. Because of how much $$$ I had in stocks, the court decided to pay me in assets - specifically, one of their offices and a number of their properties.
So now in addition to the stable I have the real estate thing going as a side enterprise. A number of my pilots work there in various functions between matches, and my character's wife permanently gave up the cockpit to become an agent shortly after their marraige. Due largely to their efforts and the buy-out of a competitor, in the few short years my character has had the company it has become quite successful.

The Real Estate business on Solaris can be a very lucrative and very dangerous business. Especially when you cross union picket lines. I know how tricky they can be to work around.
So when are you going to collect enough land to build your own arena?

That's why we're crossing the picket lines in mechs.
Last I left off with my character (this is the first time I've done anything in-character in a while) he'd just finished setting up a housing division and a second office.
Plus his pilots were still HQ'd out of the old yards, which believe it or not is inside a mountain. The storyline is that a company was cutting it as a warehouse for large equipment (an office building and housing would be on top), but when they abandoned the project ($$$) my character's dad bought the site and finished the job.
As far as our own arena goes, that's still a ways off..... although we are kinda about to be barred from Steiner arena as one of my pilots has memorized one of the sequences behind the pillars.

OOC.. Maybe that is what I can do with my volcano map I made. Change it from a scenario to a Solaris arena. Imagine a 10 for all on a volcanic island...

That runs too close to the base concept of Ishiyama, which is the main Combine arena. If you'll remember, Ishiyama is little more than an inert volcano. The lava tunnels were given electrical power and a number of lights and cameras were installed.
Other gimmics:
The FWL stadium (The Factory) is a stripped-out heavy machinery factory that just happens to have been big enough for mechs.
The FS stadium is a giant sheet of ice with a crevice on one side.
LA Stadium has a number of barriers that randomly raise and lower. The map for it is the only one that also includes the mech bays.
CC stadium is a giant jungle with a waterfall and a river flowing through it.
If I were to have my own stadium, I'd need a gimmic behind it as well.

Kraken walked in to the bar, a haggard look on his face. As usual, he went to the bar, ordered his usual, and sat down.
"What happened?" one of the patrons asked.
"My insurance company just had to do a major pay-out, so that means my rates will be sky-rocketing soon."
"Come again?"
"Ever see a bunch of enviro nuts wearing full camoflague gear huddling together to protest some construction?"
"Yeah."
"One of my pilots didn't. He's still trying to hose off his mech's feet."

OOC. I am well aware of the Solaris rings, I have used many of the maps in them. BTW my volcano scenario has custom rules for flowing lava. Mechs that jump are almost a necessity on this map. Either that or you risk leg damage and really high heat if you try to wade through it.

Well, keep in mind that in real life there's a number of eco-terrorism groups. One such group, North America's Earth Liberation Front, as a wing that routinely commits arson in the name of saving the environment (which just goes to show you how little thought was put into the matter).

OOC: (MY opinion on Eco-terrorism) Eco-terrorism is just another excuse to destroy something. You can destroy something, but that won't force anyone to stop harming the environment (burning something may be actually more harmful). I think that laws shall be made take care of this matter. Umm, enough of this ...

Maybe next time they'll be more careful, ...
Umm, were they equipped with all necessary protective things? If not than your insurance company shouldn't pay anything because people without necessary equipment are not allowed to working area
