Let me sum it up!!!

Good: I suckered ya'll into buying my books...thanks for wasting your hard earned money you sack of morons.

Good: I am happy to say that because I am so manipulative and you are all morons that I have more books on the way!

Bad: One of my books didnt make it to publishing, and thats cause people dont like me...so feel bad and get the publishers to like my book!

Good: I am once again gonna confuse all of you by saying I am Battletech, while saying i have nothing to do with it at all. Therefore you can buy all my books and I'll never like you morons!

Good: I am shutting up now!

Heehee....what a joke!

i wish ALL you hacks would shut up.

you may dislike or hate stackpole. personelly, i liked his writing, so please keep your overzelous opinions to yourself.

for those less savy, my comment of overzelous implies to to super heat or dirogitory comments. we know your opinion. leave it at that please.

It's not that I don't like his BTech books, it's his essays that fall into the catogery of things I don't like. With everyone of them he paints himself as someone who needs their ego stroked. And I have yet to see any other serious author resort to pleading with their fans to buy their books. I don't see Drake or Stirling or Pournell writting eassy attacking their fans and then begging them to buy all of their books not just one series.

Things like that piss folks off and turn them away from an authors work...besides if things are that bad for him as writer, one would think he has second job to be sure to have something to pay the bills...

Vagabond...please dont be so hypocritcal. This board has always been, and hopefulyl always be, about stating opinions. In fact...you starteded out with your opinion.

Without opinions then this whole disscussion board is pointless and we shouldnt post. C'mon now...we dont want that, do we?

As for my thing with Stackpole. His Battletech was okay, his Star Wars was dry (better than some though). His writing isnt terrible (i honestly think I can do better, but hey ^,^)...my problem is his attitude and inability to keep his own statements straight. He is also a whiner and was begging people to buy his books. Now...c'mon...thats just not right. If people dont like your work, dont pressure people into buying it...

Just some things ^^

To be honest here, nothing good is going to come out of discussing this further.

We all know everyone's opinion so I think we can just walk away from this one.

I just don't get the rabid hattred of Stackpole. It seems his unforgivable crime is that of appealing to his readers to help keep his writing career alive. He wasn't making enough money writing to support his family so he asked for help from those who enjoy reading his work so they could continue to read his books in the future. What an increadible crime!

God forbid that any business in danger of going out of business should appeal to their long-time customers for support. That's just not allowed in a democracy. That sort of evil thing only happens in those stinkin communist coutries.

As for his essays on the new Battletech, I read them too. He didn't say a thing wrong, just a lot of things many of my fellow old Btechers really don't want to hear. For instance, that this is a game, not life itself, and that this game is a business that requires profits be made from it.

Admit it, we were all sick and tired of buying book after book in which Victer yet again did nothing about his sister and did not finally step up to the line and start kicking ass and taking names. For Battletech to go on and make money required endless conflict, fragmentation causing new wars. But the way they were making it happen was very contrived and lots of us were getting tired of paying money for it. Sales were dropping and something big had to change.

Stackpole did nothing in his essays but tell us about the hard reality of business econimics. George Lucas can put out new Star Wars movies we don't like as much as the old ones, but he's doing it out of his own pocket change. If they flop at the movies his bankers will hardly notice. The people who own Battletech do not have that luxury. They have to make something that will make a profit, their paychecks depend on it. Many of us vets may not like how they are doing it, but we are not in their shoes. We're just sitting in the back seat, telling them how to drive.

I have nothing agaist Stackpole, In fact I like the Betch novels he writes.

But I have issues with anybody whose livlihood depends on fan support. But not giving a dam about their views and opinons. Until those views and opinon benifit himself.

I, personally, think Coleman is better at BTech in general (Stackpole, while he tried, always seemed to have too much of the good versus evil in his writing, whereas Coleman, at least to me, is better at getting the grey in there)...His Star Wars novels in the Rogue/Wraith Squadrons series, and the one or two main plotline novels he's written I've read, were also ok (he can write a better fighter combat than a 'Mech one, IMHO...but I can't really say anything, as I haven't gotten to the 'Mech combat portion of my fanfic, Decisions and Consequences, yet...that's probably mostly (or totally) in part(s) 4(5?)...I'm currently writing part 3...(shameless plug time)...parts 1 and 2 can be found on the CBT Fanfic forum...it's a story of Ruger's part in the FedCom Civil War)...but even in Star Wars, I thought Timothy Zahn and RA Salvatore were better...

Now, as for his fantasy novels, they were ok, but only Talion: Revenant was a standout accomplishment...I'd recommend that one to anyone, anytime...I loved that book...and I will purchase the sequel, should he publish it...

But overall, if I want fantasy stories, I'll take RA Salvatore, Elaine Cunninghaim, JK Rowling or Paul Kidd...and if I want straight Sci-Fi, non BTech, it most likely would be Isaac Asimov, Timothy Zahn (his Conqueror's series was great), David Drake...maybe a couple others I'm forgetting at the moment...
