Ummm, point of order.

I was thinking of this earlier...isn't the Arizona still commissioned? If she is then she doesn't count as ships don't lower their Ensigns to half mast.

The Navy transferred ownership of the Arizona to the National Park Service. I doubt the Arizona's flag is at perpetual full mast. If it was then the USS Utah memorial, the "other" Pearl Harbor attack memorial would be on the list as well.

I check the Natinal Parks Service. And they do not lower the Arizona's Flag. And it is the only flag at the Memorial that they do not lower. all others do.

Still checking as to why.

(Here is a interresting point (This is pure rumor that I am also trying to confirm) The bell of the Arizona, which resides in the memorial. Can only be cleaned by a a commissioned officer.)

Here is an updated facts as to why it is the only memorial at Pearl harbor that does not lower the flag

In the Navy's known history, there has
never been a ship that has taken so many
of its crew down with her.ONE THOUSAND, ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SEVEN to exact.

Still check on the bell.

The question is actually if the Arizona is still commissioned or not. If it is then it shouldn't count as it's ensign (be it on the memorial or not) would not be lowered as that would be a sign of surrender.

OK, Talked with a park ranger at the memorial and they said that the flag IS lowered at half mast on Memorial Day and on Dec 7, They even lowered it when eldest park ranger died.

So the flag does follow US Flag code and is NOT part of the exception.

But it was true that only an officer of CPO rank shall do the brightwork on the bell.

According to a book I have on Pearl Harbor the Arizona is still a commissioned ship.

I thought so (and actually found out for sure today when I was surfing for other stuff)

Something I found out today...there are actually 2 flags at the Arizona Memorial, one above the ship and one on shore. My bet is the one on shore is lowered on Memorial Day et al, while the one above the Arizona is not as it's the ensign of a commissioned ship of the US Navy.
