well, i'm pretty much desided on this game. its a waist of time.

i spent 6 months building my nation, and in 3 hours i've been reduced by half. i'm still gonna play, but i'm not gonna put any real time into it. as it will just be waisted.

I had pretty much the same experience. I built up two nice empires over half a year or so, one I expected to lose and one was way off in a nice and safe area. And just when both were starting to look decent, several battalions about half vehicles with a mech lance for the endangered one and the other one 1 vehicle and 4 infantry battalions and starting to produce motor SRMs they both got wasted by a big dog I didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of fending off.

The worst part was I didn't even get to try. I got wasted while I was offline and in bed. I'd known it for a while but after that I had to admit it and lay off this game. If you were not in on this game early on and became one of the big dogs, or if you are unwilling to spend literally hundreds of real bucks in donations, you are just dog meat waiting to happen.

There are people in Neveron that are dropping hundreds of bucks at a time just to buy donation only mechs. The rest of us are just their punching bags.

Not all of the people playing are completely buttheads. I have found a few that are not...I think the big thing is to keep going even in the face of disaster.

It isn't that the big dogs in Neveron are jerks, they are just doing what the rules allow for. The problem is that your empire will start looking like a nice juicy target long before you will have the resources to start buying or building some real firepower to hang on to it with. Long before you can support a strong enough force to survive, some big dog or other will swallow you whole in order to add your research, factories, and income to his own.

All those empires on one planet just won't work in that sense, the big dogs are the nobility and rest of us are the peasants who can't resist them. What I would love to see is something like Neveron with each empire on a seperate planet or a continent on a planet, with several thousand planets in the galaxy and a limit on the number of players, say half as many players as planets. Then buying the hyper-expensive dropships would sharply limit the scale of invasions and encourage raids to steal stuff or resrources that are not meant to take and keep your land itself.

And with a whole continent to explore for raw resources and star league caches, that would be neat too. Plus stationing your forces as garrisons or mobile reaction groups.

And if the only other planets you had any detailed info on were the ones your ships have just visited or that your spys have succeeded in making a scout report on, so much the better. The big dog could not eat you if he could not find you for a while.

I can just see this game in my head and how much time I would spent playing it. Lord, I wish I was a programmer.

Nah, I've never tried e-mail btech games. A long time ago I gave the old Trader Vic letter mail game a try for a while, but I just didn't get into it.

You might want to give them a go, that is where I get most of my BattleTech fixes these days.

E-Mail games are good, but they can be a little slow.

Still, if you like strategic games, or thinking, there probably the best.

Me I just keep dreaming the impossible dream. The game, all of it, on a disk, any size map you want, any size unit you want, decent AI, ahhh. 20 years and nobody made it yet? I could hope for Bill Gates to wave his magic wand, but I fear what the Microborgs would turn the game into. But still, to dream the impossible dream.

You know I've got that song in CD, Man of La Mancha soundrack.

I haven't looked at Megamek lately, but I was in Houston yesterday at a Commando game and I'm given to understand the program has a lot more to it than it had when I last checked it out. I'll probably download it to mess with it some this next week

I tried out Megamek.net tonight and had some fun. Lost both battles, but the second one was close and I got the 1st kill. Can't wait till I can buy myself some medium mechs on it. If anybody sees me there I go by Johnnyreb.
