it does its job, but i gotta ask... why waste the tonnage on a turret for a weapon that will hardly ever fire directly?

So that the vehicle doesn't waste movement points having to get into just the right position.

Again I ask, as artillery just needs to point in the general direction and fire via game mechanics why the turret? Is it so that it will be realistic?

Suppose, for a second, that the battle shifts and that instead of firing into the front arc the vehicle needs to fire off to one side.
Rather than moving the entire vehicle, which would incur a +1 penalty or more, the crew can simply move the turret.

Yesterday I had the idea to rip the SRMs out of a light SRM carrier and replace it with an Arrow IV.
I go to fire up HMV and find that I'd already done this one. 
Oy.
