Mogadishu, Chosin Reservoir, Bastonge, Lost Battalion, Alamo, Custer's stand.

I wonder how many times an enemy of the USA has had a unit "cornered". Every time they suffer a horrible price trying to destroy the unit. How many thousand died trying in Mogadishu? Ia Drang? Khe Kanh?

I think this is a trait of the US military, sit tight, hold your ground let the other guy come into the open where he can be killed. Let him get tired moving to you. Even the willingness to call in danger close, or on ourselves, artillery fire and close support.

There is also the story of "the Fifteen" I do not remeber a lot of details, but an ANGLICO detachment was stranded on a hill in vietnam where they could see travel routes. They were not spotted, but could not move either. The fire they called in killed regiments of the enemy.

As long as we remember our roots of the forlorn stand, and hiding in the bushes where you cannot be seen while "sniping" at the enemy, I think the military will do just fine.

Pick a bunch of peaks and build sensor stations on them along passes and travel routes in Afganistan. Spot Taliban or Al Queda, do airstrikes or artty on them. soon they won't be able to move without "wrath of God" falling on them.

Looks good on paper. But a bit to simplistic to work in real life.

But I agree with the idea.
