Overview:
Originating as an attempt at an affordable main battle tank that could engage in frontline
combat reliably despite the lack of modern technologies, the Hastam Máo HTM-37 went through
multiple revisions to achieve that goal. The subpar results of these revisions led to a
waste of funding that almost got the team behind the project executed for incompetence,
forcing them to take drastic actions and an equally drastic approach to the vehicle's design
as a whole.
The concept of a main battle tank was abandoned, with the vehicles turret removed
altogether. A primitive but powerful main cannon was mounted on the vehicle's front hull
along with two machineguns of different caliber and an impressive amount of armor was
mounted all over the vehicle. The resulting vehicle was not in the slightest what had been
requested of the team yet the resulting performance tests, combined with a mix of clever
marketing, led to the vehicle's adoption into the military regardless. A fact which spared
its designers a trip to the nearest firing line.
Despite initial doubts, the Hastam Máo HTM-37 proved an invaluable asset in the
battlefield. Cheap, easy to operate and equally easy to repair and maintain, the primitive
nature of its heavy rifle did not deter its ability to provide consistent fire support for
infantry elements; a breakthrough vehicle and light tank destroyer at the same time, most
infantrymen began to regard the Hastam Máo and their crews as a sort of "big brother" they
can rely upon to eliminate enemies that would otherwise shred the average grunt. Similarly,
the tank's crew viewed infantry as their precious eyes and ears against flanking and
ambushes.
This growing bond between infantry and their supporting assault guns, while not the initial
intent, is still being leveraged to this day for propaganda by the state; innumerable
posters and slogans presenting both as an "unbeatable combo", encouraging both sides of said
duo to rely upon the other and have no worries when charging into the battlefield. While
effective propaganda, those who have actually served in the frontlines know all too well the
limitations of the HTM-37 and generally avoid relying on it for more than taking out bunkers
or light vehicles.
Variants:
The Hastam Máo HTM-37 has two variants
The Hastam Máo HTM-37A which is the one described above.
The Hastam Máo HTM-37M which was created a seven months later, replacing the heavy rifle
with a front hull mounted LRM 15 with 3 tons of ammo and SRM 4 with 1 ton of ammo. Despite
being theoretically superior to the HTM-37A, the inconsistent damage output and perceived
wastefulness of ammunition led it to be rarely used and largely underappreciated.
