The second BattleMech designed for Clan Goliath Scorpion as part of their upgrades in the wake of Operation Revival was the Onslaught. Designed in homage to the ancient Awesome assault 'Mech of the SLDF, scientists and engineers managed to reduce overall weight, increase speed, and provide 50% greater firepower from the precise and deadly PPCs of the original. Approved for limited production in 3052, the first prototype was field tested on Roche in 3055. Both Khans of the Clan were impressed with the war machine, but the high cost of production limited the numbers that could be fielded. Nonetheless, by the end of the year, the first examples were in service with the garrison forces of the Clan. Despite the lack of versatility associated with a conventional BattleMech instead of the multi-mission OmniMech, many front-line Scorpion Warriors launched trials of possession for the new machines. When questioned on the practice, the Khans learned that the warriors considered the design the epitomy of what a 'Mech--Battle or Omni--should be. |
Weighing in at 70 tons, the Onslaught is the heaviest of the new Goliath Scorpion designs. Based upon the venerable Awesome chassis, engineers managed to retain a nearly identical weapons arrangement, albeit with far more deadly individual weapon systems. Three ER PPCs provide sustain direct-fire that few other 'Mechs--front-line or second-line--can match, let alone sustain. A single ER Small Laser provides the only back-up weapon for the unit and was included almost certainly as little more than a concession to the original. These weapons produce a massive amount of heat, but the Onslaught is more than capable of dealing with that. Twenty-one double strength heat sinks give the Warrior assigned to an Onslaught the ability to continually fire his ER PPCs in a 3-2-3 pattern without signifigantly degrading his machine. In addiiton, Clan engineers included an advanced targeting computer--a common feature on all Scorpion 'Mechs. This targeting computer allows the Warrior to concentrate the ER PPCs--one of the highest damage weapons available to the Clans--on a single hit location. A three-PPC salvo is capable of of penetrating even the center torso armor of the Dire Wolf in a single shot and more often than not will amputate an arm or leg from nearly any 'Mech currently in operation. Eleven tons of ferro-fibrous armor give the Onslaught the ability to sustain damage and keep fighting--while not as thick as the plates of the original design, one must remember that this 'Mech is ten tons lighter. Engineers had one final surprise for those who were still familiar with the Onslaught's predecessor. Instead of plodding along at a mere 54 kilometers per hour as the original did, the use of a 350XL fusion engine gave the Onslaught a maximum ground speed of 86.4 kilometers per hour. This increase in speed allows the Scorpions to use this 'Mech in a heavy cavalry role, supporting lighter units as needed, while still serving as the mailed fist of the garrison forces. |
Originally intended to serve as the heavy force of the garrison units defending Scorpion holdings, slow production and high cost have made this 'Mech relatively rare. Added to that are many front-line warriors who seek to pilot these machines. Many garrison clusters are lucky to have just one of these 'Mechs--none possess more than three. Currently, only the Scorpions field this design, though several Clans--including Jade Falcon and Star Adder--have announced their intention to secure manufacturing rights in trials of possession. |
| At the present time, the Khans are quite pleased with the Onslaught and have offered no variations upon the chassis for even limited production. |
Star Commander Amanda Kirov was recently assigned to the 4th Scorpion Cuirassiers of Alpha Galaxy. During her Trial of Posistion, Amanda managed to defeat two of her opponents, but was in turn forced to eject by the third. Three years later, the young Star Commander--already proving herself a ristar--earned a Kirov Bloodname by competing in the Grand Melee and then winning through all competition. Her feat earned her a place in Alpha Galaxy and the offer of a promotion to Star Captain. She refused, requesting instead assignment to one of the brand-new Onslaught BattleMechs. Amused by her actions, the Khans granted her request and eassigned her to the 24th Cuirassiers--the traditional command of the senior Khan of the Clan. When asked by the Khan why she turned down the promotion, she answered him with the following. 'I can earn my rank as Star Captain at any time, my Khan. When I feel I have learned all there is to leading a star, then I shall lead a Trinary, and then a Cluster. In the meantime, my new BattleMech shall serve both myself and the Clan well.' |

According to my standards this is no second line 'Mech. I consider it to be a front line 'Mech that has what it takes to stand with clan omnis... Which leaves me thinking, whether it wouldn't be easier to repod a Summoner or a Timber Wolf for the same task... |
