Many meat products could have tapeworms in them that animals get in their bodies. These same tapeworms, after being digested, could get in your bloodstreamand reach your brain - they will eat your brain cells which can cause you to die. I don't know if poultry or fish have tapeworms; you could probably ask a doctor.

If there were worms in the meat supply, the federal government would have intervened a long, long time ago.

And if this is going off of the "pouring Coke into something will cause worms to come out", it's been busted by Snopes.com - www.snopes.com/cokelore/porkworm.asp - and the Mythbusters (see the "cola myths" episode wherein they tried to dissolve a steak in cola; all they wound up doing was marinating it).

The federal government expects people to cook meat at 160 degrees to kill worms. Sandwich slices of ham are usually preheated by companies but they aren't really cooked thoroughly.

If you are afraid of tapeworms you definitely shouldn't garden or swim in unchlorinated water, both have a higher chance of infecting someone with a tapeworm then eating any meat, even pork.

Most mammals have a parasite of some sort in them and never notice it or have any problems. Most tests don't detect them. Since the area a tapeworm lives in is the digestive track (it is, after all, the best place for food) the usual symptom, if any, are minor malnourishment symptoms. Even those are more likely to be caused by a Standard American Diet of processed junk.

The chance of a tapeworm getting into the brain or spinal cord (or anywhere that isn't part of the digestive track for that matter) is one in 25 million and even then it needs to enter the body from somewhere other then the mouth (for example, open wounds when gardening or swimming or kids that touch a dog's rear end then touch their eyes).

Worm eggs and larvae can be found in leafy greens too and rarely in bulk seeds, grains, and legumes, so even a completely vegan diet won't insure you never get a worm. If you want to protect yourself from accidentally consuming one buy organic and free-range meat, wash your vegetables with diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, and soak your grains, legumes, and open seeds and nuts for 20 minutes in slightly acidic water (just add a bit of vinegar or lemon juice). Also, since acid tends to kill worms guess what they can't typically survive? Stomach acid.

Suggesting avoiding meat for best health is not a well thought-out idea because over half of human adults can not thrive without meat and a handful can't get enough protein from vegetarian sources to even avoid illness.
